Multiple Borderless MTG Lord of the Rings Cards See $30+ Price Spikes

Article at a Glance

It started with just the Witch-King of Angmar, but it appears now that MTG Borderless Poster Lord of the Rings cards are spiking in price across the board. Whether it’s Gandalf, Mount Doom, or any of the other Lord of the Rings Mythics that got this treatment, everything seems to be exploding in price. What the heck happened?

The Rise of Borderless Poster Cards

This appeared to be market manipulation at first, and it may still be to some extent, but the trend has grown too large. Multiple Lord of the Rings Poster cards are now seeing massive price increases. As their controversial appearance may suggest, these cards are surprisingly difficult to come by. They only appear in Special Edition Lord of the Rings Collector Booster packs, which translates to the second release of the product. Even within those packs, these cards are somewhat rare.

The rise in price across cards is a bit widespread, so it’s probably best if we do this as a list. Here’s what has risen in price so far:

Other cards don’t seem to support real spikes. There are similar outliers seen that started the real spikes with the other LOTR Poster cards, but the other sales for these cards have not supported the overall spike. In other words, the higher prices of these cards are unreliable. Proceed with caution:

There are other cards that have seen a spike, but there are still outliers past what the real spike is. Mount Doom, for example, has a lot of sales going for more than the range we suggested. We would recommend you stay away from sales above $55 for that card.

The Good News

For players who don’t care too much about what their cards look like, finding the cheapest variants of each card won’t cost you too much. Witch-King of Angmar, for example, only costs $3 at its cheapest. This means that those who want to play with these Lord of the Rings cards in their Commander decks for cheap have that option.

This is certainly a strange price spike, however. It’s true that these specific variants are rather rare, but having them all spike out of the blue like this is odd. Personally, I would recommend you stay away from these unless you really want to collect them. If you do, chances are you own them already. These MTG Borderless Poster Lord of the Rings cards could stay high because the supply is so low, but it’s tough to know for certain if the current demand for these cards is artificially inflated or not.
