MTG Marvel Secret Lair cards are all the rage on the secondary market, causing all kinds of cards to spike in price. Captain America, First Avenger is a particularly influential card right now. Equipment rarely get support as powerful as this one. As a result, a ton of cards that work well with Captain America are getting pricy.
Yet another card in a long line of artifacts is seeing a price increase thanks to Captain America. This time, we have an equipment that promotes multiple combat steps!
Hexplate Wallbreaker
Hexplate Wallbreaker does not have any printings in a main set. You can find this card as part of the Rebellion Rising Phyrexia: All Will Be One Commander Preconstructed deck, and in Collector Boosters for the same set. Unfortunately, this means that Hexplate Wallbreaker’s printings are rather restrictive, making it difficult to find as a single.
Hexplate Wallbreaker is a fantastic addition to Captain America Commander decks. Firstly, this equipment has the For Mirrodin! effect. This gets around the biggest weakness of equipment which is that they cannot do anything on their own. For Mirrodin! allows Hexplate Wallbreaker to function as both a threat and a buff to your creatures.
Secondly, this card provides an additional combat step. In a Voltron deck like Captain America that wants to create a gigantic Commander with a bunch of equipment, this can be devastating. Two combat steps can easily allow Captain America to take out one or two players per turn via Commander damage. You don’t even need to have Hexplate Wallbreaker equipped to Captain America in order to do this. You can simply attack with it as a 4/4 creature and get the same effect!
As a result, Hexplate Wallbreaker adds a lot of lethality and versatility to a Captain America, First Avenger Commander deck. Any card that has this equipped becomes a necessary card to kill, which can take some pressure off of your Commander.
The Spike
Normal copies of Hexplate Wallbreaker found in the precon are consistently selling for about $5. That’s 273% more than the recent nadir for the card in mid-September. A majority of the card’s spike has taken place since the beginning of November, rising from $1.38 to its current price point.
There are extended art copies of Hexplate Wallbreaker available in Phyrexia: All Will Be One Collector Booster packs. These are a bit cheaper than the normal variants right now, and supply for this variant is also a lot higher. Recent sales suggest that this version of the card is worth about $2.50 at the moment, but some copies are starting to sell for the same $5 price point.
If you’re interested in acquiring Hexplate Wallbreaker, our recommendation is to get an extended art. There are a lot of these currently available for lower price points as of the writing of this article. Almost every copy of the normal Hexplate Wallbreaker is floating around the $5 mark.
Your other option to avoid paying bloated prices for Hexplate Wallbreaker is simply to wait. Once everyone building Captain America, First Avenger in Commander gets their cards, prices should go down as demand for this card disappears.
Either way, Hexplate Wallbreaker does seem to do some heavy lifting in Captain America, First Avenger Commander decks. If you’re interested in playing the card, we recommend getting a copy of the extended art version before it’s too late.
