Ridiculously Cheap $1 MTG Foundations Cards Are Insane Buys

The prices for MTG Foundations are in a state of flux right now. The set has only just been released, so no one really knows how much anything is, or should be, worth. Typically, the price of mythics will crash hard during this period, but these aren’t the only cards to look out for. It seems a number of incredible MTG Foundations cards are insanely cheap right now.

Take High Fae Trickster, for example. We can’t believe how cheap this card is at the moment for what it offers. Essentially, High Fae Trickster is an instant speed blue Vedalken Orrery, which is a $6.50 card at its cheapest. Despite the similarities, High Fate Trickster is currently worth just one dollar, which seems like an insanely good deal.

This deal looks so good, in fact, that we can’t help but wonder if MTG Foundations has even more hidden gems. Somewhat unsurprisingly, the answer to this question is yes. Whether or not these overpowered and underpriced cards will stay cheap for long, however, is another matter.

Spinner of Souls

Spinner of Souls MTG

Admittedly, this low price isn’t completely surprising given that there’s not an obvious home for Spinner of Souls at the moment. While it synergizes well with Aristocrats decks in Commander, they’re not as universally powerful as HIgh Fae Trickster.

That said, Spinner of Souls is still a very powerful MTG card that deserves more love. Getting an endless stream of creatures could easily help set up combos or simply outlast an opponent’s reserves of removal. Even if they’re not the core of a deck, Spinner of Souls does serious work, a lot more than what you’d expect from an 80-cent card.

Don’t be surprised if Spinner of Souls ends up getting a fair bit more expensive as time goes on.

Drake Hatcher

Drake Hatcher is easily capable of taking over a game in the Standard format. Prowess is a powerful mechanic right now, and dealing at least three damage with Drake Hatcher rewards you with a new creature. This strategy excels alongside the Bloomburrow Mouse package. Heartfire Hero, Emberheart Challenger, and Manifold Mouse have even taken over the Pioneer format for good reason.

Drake Hatcher isn’t powerful enough for Pioneer, but it could perhaps play a role in Standard. One big connection with this creature offers a massive reward. Six damage is not hard to accomplish with cards like Monstrous Rage in the format. Should you manage this, you get to spawn two additional fliers to easily take over a game.

Now, there is a very real chance that Drake Hatcher is simply a ‘win more’ card. In this case, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a home for this card until Bloomburrow rotates out. For now, the card is only worth about 30 cents, which could make it a decent pick-up for a spellslinger Commander deck.

Sylvan Scavenging

Sylvan Scavenging is perhaps the card on this short list that is most deserving of its price point. Saying that, however, any enchantment that can continually create value turn after turn is a powerful one. This feels like a green Phyrexian Arena.

Created to outgrind opposing strategies, this is a great sideboard tool for aggressive decks against attrition strategies. Ideally, you want to be using the second mode of this card as much as possible, for maximum value. Subsequently, you’ll want to use Sylvan Scavenging in decks in decks with plenty of big creatures.

Failing this, Sylvan Scavenging’s first mode could be decent for counter-focused EDH decks. The effect may not light the world on fire, sure, but it’s still a nice bit of extra value. Regardless of where you’re playing it, Sylvan Scavenging can see play, a lot more than its price tag would suggest.

Right now, Sylvan Scavenging is just a 30-cent card. This could easily climb to at least a dollar in the future.

Giada, Font of Hope

Giada isn’t a new MTG Foundations card. This reprint is originally found in the Streets of New Capenna set. Despite being a reprint with a place in the market already, this new version of Giada, Font of Hope is remarkably cheap. Unlike past copies which are at least $3 apiece, the new Foundations printing is selling for less than a dollar right now.

On its own, this massive price drop is already surprising, but it could be even more impressive if it lasts. Thanks to MTG Foundations providing a strong Angel Typal package, Giada may soon see play in Standard. Whether or not this archetype will manifest currently remains to be seen, but all the tools are there at least. Failing Standard, Giada does see some fringe play in Pioneer.

Ultimately, out of all the cards on this list, Giada, Font of Hope is the most likely to change in price. Right now it looks very impressive, but the market clearly hasn’t equalized across the new and old variants. With this in mind, now may be the best time to pick up any needed copies of Giada. Once the market settles, there’s no telling how expensive Giada, Font of Hope will be, but I’d expect more than a dollar at least.
