While The Hobbit hasn’t been a great set for unique legends so far, there are a lot of new cards that can bolster a wide range of Commander 99s. Typal and artifact decks, in particular, have gotten some love, and today’s new leak has an interesting tool for some Spellslinger decks.
Of course, because it’s a leak, there is a chance that Glamdring, Foe-hammer could be fake. That said, between its artwork and its reasonable effects, it does seem like this card is the real deal.
MTG The Glamdring, Foe-hammer
For most decks, specifically Spellslinger ones, Glamdring, Foe-hammer’s Adventure spell might be more interesting than the equipment itself. Kess, Dissident Mage, for example, can get extra value from Gleam of Death’s self-milling by recasting spells multiple times. Lier, Disciple of the Drowned can go even further, directly recasting Adventures themselves from the graveyard.
Outside of pure Spellslinger strategies, copying Gleam of Death with Alania, Divergent Storm, Naru-Meha, Master Wizard, or Gorion, Wise Mentor can lead to an instant hand refill. If you want to use both sides of Glamdring, Glarb, Calamity’s Augur and Teval, Arbiter of Virtue both have self-mill themes and want to cast massive spells.
While Glamdring’s equipment side needs a creature and another payoff to work, it’s well worth the benefit. X-spell themed decks like Zimone, Infinite Analyst, for example, can easily get massive reductions on their game-ending Finale of Devastation. Big-spell Commanders like Zaffai, Thunder Conductor and Vadrik, Astral Archmage can also use Glamdring to speed up their gameplans immensely.
Infinite Potential
Of course, with such a strong cost reduction ability, Glamdring, Foe-hammer is bound to create lots of different infinite combos. For example, equipping Urabrask with Glamdring allows you to create infinite damage with Searing Touch. Once equipped, Searing Touch will only cost one mana to cast with Buyback, allowing Urabrask to cast the card infinitely using the red mana it produces.
Thanks to Storm-Kiln Artist growing in power off of the Treasures it creates, Glamdring, Foe-hammer creates a wide range of infinites with it, too. With one red mana available, you can cast Seething Anger infinitely, making all of your creatures infinitely large. If your Buyback spell is Haze of Rage, the Storm trigger will create infinite mana and infinite tokens.
Stepping away from Buyback spells, Glamdring, Foe-hammer can also create some infinite combos with Ghostly Flicker and Archaeomancer. So long as you have Glamdring equipped to another creature with at least two power, Ghostly Flicker will only cost one blue mana to cast. Flicker Archaeomancer and an Island, and you can cast your instant infinitely. If you use Scholar of the Ages, you can recur all of your instants and sorceries with this combo.
While the card certainly isn’t a new Spellslinger super-staple, Glamdring, Foe-hammer should be a powerful new addition for any synergistic decks. Because of this, Glamdring shouldn’t be the most expensive card to find once prerelease season kicks off, making it easily accessible for those who want it.
