We’re well into MTG’s The Hobbit spoiler season at this point, and the set has felt like somewhat of a mixed bag. While there are some exciting new cards for Commander and competitive players alike, there haven’t been many new super staples. With how widely applicable Fateful Discovery is, however, it has a very strong chance of being a Commander nuisance.
All of that said, because the card is a leak, and not an official spoiler, there is a chance that Fateful Discovery could be fake. Though this does seem unlikely.
MTG Fateful Discovery
Easily triggered by Mox Opal and Mishra’s Bauble, Fateful Discovery has the potential to become a broken Magic card. Thankfully, Fateful Discovery’s expensive mana value should keep it out of competitive formats, but it will certainly be extremely strong in Commander. Easily playable in Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain decks, Fateful Discovery could even deck you out when used alongside Panharmonicon.
For some ridiculous reason, Fateful Discovery cares about artifacts entering instead of being cast, allowing it to go nuts in token decks. This rewards a ton of already powerful legends like Lonis, Cryptozoologist, or Urza, Chief Artificer with a mountain of cards just for sticking to their normal gameplans. April O’Neil, Human Element is particularly scary with this card, turning each spell your opponents cast into a new card.
Whether you create a ton of treasures with Bootlegger’s Stash, or just copy the enchantment directly with Mirrormade, breaking Fateful Discovery is worryingly easy. Heck, using Mycosynth Lattice or Encroaching Mycosynth turns every permanent you play into a new card.
Caring about artifact entry even sets Fateful Discovery up to create some infinite combos. With The Locust God and Mycosynth Lattice in play, for example, you can draw your deck while flooding the board with Insect Tokens. Just make sure you have a win condition, like Laboratory Maniac online, or else you’ll deck out.
Thanks to becoming a nauseatingly strong card draw engine in any deck that has artifact synergies, Fateful Discovery is going to be all over Commander very soon. While it may not be quite as widespread as the likes of Orcrist, Goblin-cleaver, there’s a fair chance that this enchantment will be extremely popular.
