Last Friday, Wizards of the Coast went all out and revealed most of the 2027 MTG release calendar. Announcing all of the important dates and properly revealing the Magic Multiverse sets, it looks like a blockbuster year for MTG. As if this wasn’t enough, MTG’s Head Designer, Mark Rosewater, went on to reveal an extra tidbit about the year to come.
No Small Sets in 2027?
Kaiasky: Are all of the 2027 sets going to be full-size or will some be small sets?

Considering we’re only getting six MTG sets in 2027, the reveal that they’ll all be full-size might not be totally surprising. Currently, the only lingering question is about how many Commander decks we’ll get, but that has been half answered already.
During MagicCon: Amsterdam’s Preview Panel, it was confirmed that all of the 2027 Magic Multiverse sets will have four precons. Technically, since they’re all full sets, the Universes Beyond releases may get the same precon-heavy treatment. While this is hardly guaranteed, it doesn’t feel like a stretch, either, considering we’re getting 22 precons this year.
For now, it’s unclear just how many Universes Beyond precons we’ll get next year. Sadly, we might be waiting a while, too, since it’s unknown when Wizards will reveal the rest of the 2027 release calendar. In theory, it could happen as soon as Gen Con this month, but that remains to be seen.
Beyond this, we can only hope that getting six large sets per year will continue as a trend. While they’re not as bad as Aftermath-style micro-sets, smaller sets are rarely as well received as their large counterparts. Either they’re stretching a theme that’s thin on the ground, or rushing what could have been a larger, more enjoyable set.
Hopefully, Wizards of the Coast knows this, and the numbers of what sells well will back it up, too. Potentially, this could lead to The Hobbit being the last smaller set for a long while, but that remains to be seen. Considering we’re unlikely to hear about 2028 until this time next year, I wouldn’t hold your breath till then.
Wait and See
Realistically, while we do know a good bit about the 2027 MTG release calendar already, there are ultimately some unknowns. For now, we’re just going to have to wait and see what’s in store, and what gets announced when. Thankfully, with The Hobbit, Reality Fracture, and Star Trek on the horizon, we shouldn’t be bored until then, at least.
