In an update from the Commander Rules Committee today, they looked to update the community on things. While there are no changes to the Banned and Restricted list for the format, they did address a few other things.
The Community’s Concern
With the community showing multiple concerns around various cards like Dockside Extortionist, Tergrid, God of Fright, and Thassa’s Oracle being a few, it’d make sense for these cards to be talked about by the Rules Committee. Well, they did, and their thoughts might not be what the community wants to hear.
The Rules Committee has a very fine line of when cards warrant bannings. This line involves whether or not a card can be dealt with before the game ever gets going, through pre-game player discussion and social contract. Essentially, the RC don’t view these cards a ban worthy.
Social Contract?
What does Social Contract really mean? Well as defined by the FAQ Section, Social Contract basically means, Don’t play in games you don’t want to. Before games begin, players should discuss what kinds of experience that they want to have in the game, whether it be more casual, or highly competitive, and come to a group consensus around that. This can eliminate some cards from the game, such as those mentioned above, if they don’t fit into the social contract of the game.
