MTG Final Fantasy Enchantment Spikes 400% in Price Due to Hero Synergy

Share

After all the main set spoilers were revealed last week, now the Marvel Super Heroes precons are finally being unveiled. So far, with two decks down, Wizards of the Coast hasn’t disappointed. That being said, these new precons haven’t exactly set the MTG financial markets alight as we often see.

So far, we’ve only seen a couple of cards spike in price, thanks to an unusual main set legend. Now, however, it appears the precons might finally be catching up thanks to Hero Typal synergies. With the Avengers Assemble precon providing the perfect base for this, it’s no wonder Champions from Beyond has jumped in price.

Originally released as part of the Scions & Spellcraft precon, Champions from Beyond is a fantastic card for go-wide decks. Not only can it create its own tokens, but it can easily replace itself through card draw and Scry. As if that wasn’t enough, it also provides a scaling buff that gets pretty scary when you’re looking to end the game.

Thanks to this power, Champions from Beyond is already seeing play in around 32,800 Commander decks, according to EDHREC. While most of these lists are its original precon, Commanders like Baylen, the Haymaker offer an incredible second home. Curiously, looking at the stats online, Marvel Super Heroes hasn’t caused a significant uptick in Champions from Beyond’s play rate yet, but that could change soon.

As you might expect from a Marvel set, there are plenty of new cards that care about Heroes. Both Agent Phil Coulson and Captain America Wings of Freedom, for example, can turn Hero Tokens into major threats. Similarly, Captain America, Team Leader can give any Hero Tokens a buff while getting stronger itself.

Considering Captain America, Team Leader helms the Avengers Assemble precon, Champions from Beyond makes for a compelling upgrade. The Command Zone even identified it as such when revealing the deck yesterday, which unsurprisingly pushed demand up. Now, the price of Champions from Beyond has spiked fairly significantly, but that might just be the start.

The Spike

MTG Champions from Beyond Price Spike

While the Avengers Assemble precon was only revealed on Monday, June 8th, Champions from Beyond has been growing in popularity for a while. On June 1st, the card saw its first major price spike, just before Marvel Super Heroes previews began. After that, multiple dates have clocked over 100 near-mint sales as players jump about Hero Typal synergies.

In total, over the past month, over 728 near-mint copies of Champions from Beyond have been sold. Unsurprisingly, this has put a pretty big dent in supply, with only 44 listings left on TCGplayer of any condition. Naturally, this has caused a pretty significant price spike, with prices jumping 400% exactly since June began.

On May 30th, copies of Champions from Beyond were selling for just $0.60 on TCGplayer. Now, however, a near-mint, non-foil default frame example will set you back exactly $3. While this is already a significant jump, prices quickly increase beyond this point, so this spike might not be done yet.

Thankfully, if you are after a copy of Champions from Beyond, there are still some savings to be found. The extended art variant is currently only selling for $1.80 for near-mint copies, for example. While there aren’t many copies available at this price point, there are also a few worse-condition examples, too.

For better or worse, though, it definitely feels like we’re mid spike right now. While there’s no telling exactly how high the price of Champions from Beyond will soar, this enchantment has some compelling long-term potential to consider.

Compelling Potential

Typically, while they can spike incredibly hard, Commander-based price spikes tend to be rather fickle. Since we get so many precons each year nowadays, it doesn’t take long before something new comes along and desires shift. While there is a good chance of this happening to Champions from Beyond, it could easily tick back up again.

For better or worse, we already know we’re getting multiple future Marvel sets. Since each of these is bound to be loaded with Heroes, demand for Champions from Beyond should return before too long. Currently, it’s unclear when these future sets might release, but if we get one a year, prices might not even dip before they spike again.

Notably, while future Marvel sets are confirmed, there’s technically no guarantee that we’ll get additional Hero Typal support. As such, putting all of your money into copies of Champions from Beyond might be a little bit premature. If nothing else, there’s a non-zero chance this card could be reprinted in a future precon, after all.

Ultimately, as always, we’re just going to have to wait and see what happens to the price of Champions from Beyond. So long as it doesn’t get reprinted, however, it’ll definitely be a card to watch going forward.
