As the dedicated Hero deck of Marvel Super Heroes, Avengers Assemble has a lot of players hyped in this pre-release period. Unfortunately, as is often the case with precons, the list here is spread pretty thin, with elements of Hero Typal, +1/+1 Counters, and Modified all vying for space. Fortunately, there’s a range of powerful upgrades available, which turn Avengers Assemble into the MTG Hero Typal deck it was always meant to be.
Stacking Up The Synergy

One of the most notable issues with Avengers Assemble lies in its suite of Heroes, many of which don’t directly synergize with the deck outside of their type. Cards like Speed, Young Avenger and Captain Mar-Vell, Space-Born, for example, feel like transplants from other decks entirely. There are also some Heroes here, like Hercules, Olympian Hero, that are clearly meant to support the Modified theme we’re moving away from.
With these cards out of the way, we can bring in some of the better Hero Typal support from Marvel Super Heroes. Daredevil, Man Without Fear gives the deck a pretty excellent draw engine, while Blur of Heroism lets you play at instant speed much more consistently than Captain Mar-Vell. Captain America, Super-Soldier and Captain America, Unbowed offer great protection as well, keeping your Hero squad safe from board wipes.
Speaking of protection, Spectacular Spider-Man is a must-include for Avengers Assemble, too. While it doesn’t offer direct Hero synergy, it is a cheap protection spell attached to a solid Hero body. Cutting Captain America, Living Legend for this banger makes a ton of sense, as it maintains your curve while upping the power.
Bringing The Buffs

An unfortunate symptom of Hero Typal being such a young strategy is that many of its current support pieces just aren’t very good. Avengers Assemble includes a number of such cards, which can be swapped to more generic Typal support to serve the deck better.
She-Hulk, Wallbreaker, Hulkbuster Armor, and Firebird, Blazing Ranger technically let your Heroes deal more damage, but not in a very impressive way. Cutting these for Collective Inferno, Vanquisher’s Banner, and Shared Animosity will get you much more consistent results.
Similarly, West Coast Expansion is a pretty mediocre card draw piece, and can be swapped for the superior Distant Melody instead. On the protection side, The Wasp, Winsome Avenger is decent early, but cutting it for Kindred Boon gives you much better long-term play.
If you’ve got some extra budget to work with, you can bring in some serious high-end Typal stuff here to boot. Cards like Chronicle of Victory and Roaming Throne will massively boost your power, while Cavern of Souls is a great addition to your mana base. These cards are good enough to sub in for pretty much anything in the base deck, but we’d recommend weaker pieces like Heroic Return and Coastal Peak.
Unleash Fury

Another way you can take Avengers Assemble to the next level is by building in additional synergies for the face Commander, Director Nick Fury. One of the best options here is to copy or Clone it, to double down on its discount and pseudo-draw.
Most copy effects won’t work here since Nick Fury is legendary, but you can use Spark Double for the desired effect. You can also rope in Sakashima the Impostor and Sakashima of a Thousand Faces as redundancy, if budget allows.
You’ll also want to include some ways to double Fury’s excellent draw trigger for extra cards, such as Firebender Ascension and Delney, Streetwise Lookout. In the same vein, extra combat cards like Éomer, Marshal of Rohan will get you extra attacks, and therefore extra draws, with Fury.
To make room for all of this extra synergy, you can remove cards from the precon that are intended to work with the abandoned Modified theme. War Machine, Avenging Arsenal, Love on the Battlefield, and Gift of Immortality are all easy cuts in this regard.
MTG Avengers Assemble Power Upgrades

To really take Avengers Assemble to the next level, you’ll want to add the trio of Game Changers that bracket three play allows. Since it’s a heavily board-reliant deck, adding extra premium protection to Avengers Assemble with Teferi’s Protection is a good move. You can easily swap out the weaker protection piece Heroic Sacrifice to bring this banger on board.
In a similar vein, adding premium card advantage pieces in Rhystic Study and The One Ring will keep the Heroes flowing even in the face of removal. Some of the deck’s inferior draw, like Reconnaissance Mission and Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings, can be cut in their place.
Bring all of these upgrades together, and Avengers Assemble will become a legitimately scary Hero Typal deck for your next Commander night. With a lot more Marvel sets potentially on the horizon, it’ll only get better with time, too.
