Modern Horizons 2 may be designed to expand Magic: The Gathering’s Modern Constructed format, but fans are also excited to play the brand new and reprinted cards in Limited formats like Booster Draft and Sealed, and now we know what Limited archetypes to expect from the upcoming straight-to-Modern set.

During this week’s Weekly MTG stream, Wizards of the Coast revealed some new and reprinted cards from Modern Horizons 2, along with their borderless and old school frame versions. Cards included the Dakkon, Shadow Slayer planeswalker card, legendary creatures like Thrasta, Tempest’s Roar and Yusri, Fortune’s Flame, reprints with old school frames like Force of Negation and Giver of Runes , and more.

In addition to the Modern Horizons 2 previews, Dan Musser, Play Design Manager at Wizards of the Coast, also revealed the ten Limited archetypes of the upcoming set, and each of them are aligned to a dual color combination.

Limited Archetypes of Modern Horizons 2

  • WU – Affinity / Artifact Matters
  • UB – Paying you for discarding cards
  • BR – Madness
  • RG – Storm
  • WG – +1/+1 counters
  • WB – Reanimator
  • UR – Delirium (multiple card types in graveyard)
  • BG – Token matters as sacrifice outlets for effects
  • RW – Artifacts matter / Modular build
  • GU – Junk – “collect a bunch of random tokens and do something with them” – higher than number of token types

It looks like Modern Horizons 2 will feature a mix of familiar mechanics that will be fun to play in Limited formats. The Red/Green Storm archetype is the most surprising here since Storm archetypes are usually aligned to blue and red, but after seeing Thrasta, Tempest’s Roar, we might actually see some new archetypes that will be introduced in the Modern Constructed format.
