The new Planeswalker card from Modern Horizons 2 can be your Commander, and here’s why.
Earlier today, Wizards of the Coast revealed a new Magic: The Gathering Planeswalker card from Modern Horizons 2, and it’s called Grist, the Hunger Tide, and it has a unique ability that makes it a 1/1 Insect creature in addition to its other types when the card isn’t on the battlefield. Now, Commander players are wondering if you can use Grist as your Commander because it’s considered a creature if it’s not on the battlefield but not considered a creature during deck construction. However, it looks like there is an exception that will let you play this Planeswalker card as your Commander.
Wizards of the Coast’s Matt Tabak has confirmed that Grist, the Hunger Tide can be used as your Commander because “its first ability will function during deck construction”.
According to Tabak, a new rule will clarify why Grist can be played as a Commander:
