On Thursday, May 27, Richard Kane Ferguson’s original painting for Dakkon, Shadow Slayer was sold via auction on the MTG Art Market for $31,000.
Dakkon, Shadow Slayer by Richard Kane Ferguson was commissioned for the upcoming Modern Horizons 2 set, reviving the character he first painted 27 years ago. This piece is a work of oil and acrylic on unstretched canvas, and measures an incredible 35 inches by 47 inches. That’s almost three feet by four feet! That’s one of the largest traditional artworks created for the game.
Richard K. Ferguson’s Dakkon, Shadow Slayer art sold for $31,000!
The auction was run by the artist’s agent, Mark Aronowitz on the MTG Art Market Facebook group, and it opened immediately with a $15,000 opening ask price. On Day 2, a private bidder pushed the auction price to $25,000, and after a half dozen bids, it was sold for $31,000.
Richard Kane Ferguson began illustrating for MTG in 1994 with the release of the Legends expansion, where Dakkon was first introduced in a card. He illustrated regularly for Magic until the late 2000s, completing more than 60 cards. After more than a decade, Ferguson is back with the illustration of Blackblade Reforged, the legendary weapon of Dakkon.
