Today on Twitter, legendary dark fantasy artist Mike Franchina announced that he is going to be working on a Magic: the Gathering set.

Mike Franchina has worked with other large clients, such as Blizzard Entertainment, Grinding Gear Games, Fatshark and EA / Mythic Entertainment. Working on titles such as Diablo 3 and Path of Exile, Mike’s detailed, gritty and gruesome art style is truly something to behold. But what Magic products could he be working on?

Secret Lair

We know that there are various Mutliverse Beyond Secret Lairs coming out soon. It is possible that it could be something from there. If the Warhammer 40,000 product is a Secret Lair, then this may fit right in. Franchina has done some Warhammer concept work in the past so this would make sense that Wizards is tapping into that.

It’s possible as well that we may have another run in with the Phyrexians. If this is in a mainline set, then we may not see this set for at least a year, since art and design happen a couple years in advanced of release. The art style of the existing Phyrexians seem to fit the gruesome style that Franchina is known for. This seems to be the running theory among Twitter and Reddit users, and I’d love to see Mike’s take on our biomechanical overlords.
