Last Chance at $65,000 MTG Draft Starts This Weekend

Article at a Glance

The Vintage Cube Live tournament on Magic Online is one of the highest-paying MTG events to date. In total, eight different winners get the opportunity to draft a real Vintage Cube at MagicCon: Las Vegas in late October, this year. With cards like a Beta Black Lotus, all of the Power Nine, and every Dual Land up for grabs, a seat at that table is valued at $65,000.

While this event started up months past, MTG players still have one last opportunity to compete for the final seat at one of the most prestigious drafts in Magic history. It’s Draftsies keepsies, and the competition for the final seat starts this weekend.

Considering how heavily Magic Tournament payouts have been cut in recent years, playing for a chance at $65,000 in value from your own home is one of the biggest opportunities players will get in the world of Magic. As you may expect, with such a massive prize available for eight players, getting that prize is, unsurprisingly, tough.

The Vintage Cube LIVE event has three phases per week. The first is a league phase where players must win four games against random opponents in the Vintage Cube format. Notably, when the Vintage Cube Live event started, this requirement only had players go 3-0, but that proved too easy. Following this, you will gain entry to a 64-player Vintage Cube Draft. In order to get to the final stage, you must go 6-0 in total throughout this event, drafting another Vintage Cube deck if you manage to make it to the top eight of your pod. After winning the Vintage Cube 64 event, one last eight-player single-elimination tournament stands in between you and your spot at the real-world table. In total, you must go 13-0 with four different Vintage Cube decks to win the $65,000 draft seat. If that sounds like a lot, that’s because it is.

While it may take a lot to win the $65,000 seat, thankfully the entry to try is rather cheap. You only need to pay $6 in online currency to try your hand at the grand prize, and depending on where you finish in your run, it’s possible to recoup your money without going all the way. This allows players to try their hand at the event multiple times without much fallout.

Will You Take Your Shot?

Once the Vintage Cube LIVE leagues close after receiving enough registrants this weekend, that will be the end of the Vintage Cube LIVE event. It appears as though this was an incredibly popular event, so we wouldn’t be surprised if something similar returned in the future. That said, we doubt that the prizing will be the exact same. Getting together a paper Vintage Cube is incredibly difficult, especially considering that so many of the MTG cards in the Cube appear on the Reserved List, and are otherwise incredibly rare. The contents of the live Vintage Cube Draft in Las Vegas is why the prize pool for this event is so outlandishly high. So, while a similar tournament might return in the future, we doubt that players will have another opportunity to draft a Vintage Cube for keeps.
