After getting the community excited with the promise of a Beta Draft, MTG players have been salivating at any potential news regarding MTG’s 30th-anniversary celebration in Los Vegas. We covered some of the entry options for the event since the value between options may vary wildly. Some new spoilers have been announced as promotional material for the exclusive event, and it looks like MTG may be getting its very own mascot? Li’l Giri makes its first appearance!
Secret Lair: Li’l Giri Saves the Day
Among the promotional material announced for MTG’s 30th-anniversary event, a Secret Lair has been previewed. This product follows the story of Li’l Giri, a hero who finds a child under attack by a mechanical villain!
The entire Secret Lair has a story running through the flavor text where Li’l Giri fights the robot villain and saves the child, with the possibility of a second season presented at the end.
Some of the cards in this Secret Lair do not have the most demand behind them, but the best two cards in the lair have been saved for last (this is the order in which the flavor text reads). That being said, Curiosity is a popular infinite combo piece in EDH decks and sees some fringe play in Mono-Blue Spirit-like tempo decks. A promotional foil version of this card may be desirable to EDH players who want to foil their Niv-Mizzet, Parun decks out.
The Chase Cards
Vandalblast is a desirable card for EDH and some constructed formats. Its overload cost can turn a game of Commander on its head by destroying all of your opponent’s artifacts while keeping yours intact! In a pinch, Vandalblast can be used as a quick way to destroy an artifact plaguing the table. For those looking to acquire one for themselves. The cheapest printing of Vandalblast goes for around $5-6 in NM condition, but the card has been on a significant price spike since the beginning of July. It is, therefore, likely to stabilize at a higher price.
Last Chance is an exact copy of Warrior’s Oath, a Portal Three Kingdoms card that recently saw a reprint in Double Masters 2022. There have only been a few printings of Last Chance, which are expensive. Valued at around $50 on average, Last Chance is an effect that appeals primarily to EDH players. Using effects like Sundial of the Infinite or Obeka, Brute Chronologist allows you to end your turns prematurely, skipping your end step and ultimately turning Last Chance into a two mana extra turn spell! Decks like this will salivate for additional copies of the same ability, granting demand for both Last Chance and Warrior’s Oath alike. This card should pay for the supplementary price of a Secret Lair on its own. Depending on how many are interested in the product, availability could allow this card to spike even further.
MTG 30th Anniversary Spoilers
MTG’s 30th anniversary is bathing in the stained glass style of promo from the Dominaria United set coming out! Alongside the Commander event promo Sol Ring that has been around for a while, we are getting new art for Arcane Signet! This card art looks like it will be stunning with a foil treatment. EDH players should get excited about this!
In addition to the new Arcane Signet, a unique 30th-anniversary copy of Richard Garfield, Ph. D., initially released in Unhinged, will be available. MTG’s Legendary Human Designer will be attending the Vegas event in person, so if you want to meet him, it’s a fantastic opportunity.
Are you looking forward to the stained glass treatment in Dominaria United? Celebrate with MTG’s 30th-anniversary deck box! This looks fantastic and should be available in most (if not all) entry packages. You can get these alongside the new Li’l Giri themed card sleeves.
Any traveling MTG player knows that your bag is essential. Between competitive decks, traders, and EDH decks for supplementary events, traveling with many cards can create a lot of hassle. Hopefully, this 30th-anniversary backpack is equipped with the space and material needed to transport our cards reliably.
An exclusive pin is also available, but the design has not yet been confirmed. If you want to look at the previewed pin, alongside any other discourse about the anniversary event, you can find Wizard’s official post regarding it here.
