The release of Innistrad Remastered is now less than two months away, and we’re starting to get bombarded with information about the set. Today at 10 PM PST, a Magic livestream showcased a plethora of reprints in the set along with a handful of enticing booster fun treatments. Despite the fact that this is a reprint-focused set, there’s a lot to look forward to.
One of the most appealing factors this set has in store for us is the retro frame bonus sheet. These retro frame cards are absolutely beautiful and are sure to bring about a nostalgic feel to any enfranchised player collecting them. Notably, though, there are some unique factors that make this bonus sheet a little different than we’re used to.
Tons of Retro Frame Cards
Like other bonus sheets, every play booster and collector booster are guaranteed to feature at least one non-foil retro frame card. There are over 120 retro frame cards available to pull, which will no doubt enhance the booster cracking experience.
These retro frame cards range from common all the way to mythic rare. This set features 35 commons, 76 uncommons, 24 rares, and 12 mythic rares in the retro frame. In play boosters, retro frame cards are given one dedicated slot, where players will exclusively find one non-foil retro frame card of any rarity.
Things get a little more interesting for collector boosters. Two card slots are guaranteed to hold non-foil common and uncommon booster fun cards, at least one of which will be a retro frame card. From there, two slots boast non-foil booster fun rare or mythic rare cards. In both slots, a retro frame rare will appear 41.7% of the time and a mythic rare will show up 14.8% of the time.
Importantly, one final slot will hold a foil booster fun rare or mythic rare. There’s over a 55% chance that a foil retro frame card will appear in this spot. These foil retro frame cards are only found in collector boosters.
An Unusual Twist
Unlike typical premier set bonus sheets in the past, nearly every retro frame card in Innistrad Remastered is also available in the main set in traditional form. However, a select group of five mythic rares can only be pulled in this old-border style.
At this point we only know two of the five special mythic rares. As you might expect, though, these are two of the most iconic Innistrad cards in existence.
First up, we have Snapcaster Mage. Snapcaster Mage used to be an absolute powerhouse in Modern. From Splinter Twin strategies to various control decks, beating down with Snapcaster Mage after getting value from its triggered ability was a realistic win condition for years.
Even though the card has been power crept to oblivion and reprinted in numerous Masters sets, the creature still holds a price tag of over $16 in its cheapest form, according to TCGPlayer market price.
The other card we know so far is Liliana of the Veil. Once again, Liliana was a Modern staple back in the day. Jund decks would make great use of Liliana to deny the opponent of resources. Nowadays, Liliana pops up in Standard and Pioneer from time to time but simply isn’t what she used to be.
Still, even Liliana has a pretty hefty price tag. Players can pick up Dominaria United copies for approximately $14.
Generally, bonus sheets have a history of tanking the price of reprints. This makes sense with every booster having a bonus sheet reprint in the mix, increasing supply significantly. With these five retro frame mythic rares, however, it’s possible that these versions will actually be worth a lot more.
Ultimately, it depends on how rare it is to open one of these five cards compared to all the main set retro frame cards. This awaits to be seen, but don’t be surprised if these cards are worth a lot of money.
Double-Faced Retro Cards
Lastly, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the fact that a group of double-faced cards will be available in retro frame for the first time ever. Innistrad and associated sets are chock full of transforming cards like Archangel Avacyn, so this is a nice touch.
The Innistrad Remastered livestream also revealed the presence of Invasion of Innistrad as well as Meld cards like Midnight Scavengers. These may not end up being available in retro frame, but anything is possible.
As you can tell, Innistrad Remastered is full of surprises. Innistrad was one of the most popular sets of all time, so seeing this new set pay homage to the original set is super cool. Make sure to mark your calendars for the official release of Innistrad Remastered on January 24, 2025.
