New MTG Festival in a Box Bonus Card is Spicy Retro Frame Game Changer

Share
An old-school take on a modern MTG classic!

It’s safe to say that Mystery Booster: Commander Edition isn’t off to the best of starts availability-wise. The first boxes of the set went on sale on Monday via Festival in a Box Atlanta, and completely sold out in a blistering 20 minutes. While this is unfortunate for players hoping to snag some of the set for themselves, the limited supply model has allowed the lucky few to get their boxes already. As a result, we now know what the MTG Bonus Card for Festival in a Box Atlanta is, and it’s a bit of a doozy.

For anyone even slightly familiar with Commander, Notion Thief Notion Thief Notion Thief Flash

needs no introduction. This is one of the premier draw disruption pieces in the format, playing in a very similar space to the banned Hullbreacher Hullbreacher Hullbreacher Flash
If an opponent would draw a card except the first one they draw in each of their draw steps, instead you create a Treasure token. (It's an artifact with "{T}, Sacrifice this token: Add one mana of any color.")
by denying opponents draws and granting you them instead. By Flashing it in you can essentially counter any draw spell you’d like, or cast it in response to a wheel effect like Windfall Windfall Windfall Each player discards their hand, then draws cards equal to the greatest number of cards a player discarded this way. to completely bury the table in advantage.

Unsurprisingly, thanks to the sheer power of the disruption on offer here, it didn’t take long for Notion Thief to end up on the Commander Game Changers list. It was added during the list’s first update in April 2025, along with fellow draw disruption cards Orcish Bowmasters Orcish Bowmasters Orcish Bowmasters Flash

and Narset, Parter of Veils Narset, Parter of Veils Narset, Parter of Veils Each opponent can't draw more than one card each turn.
−2: Look at the top four cards of your library. You may reveal a noncreature, nonland card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.
. Despite this limitation, the card still sees a ton of play in the format, appearing in over 132,000 decks by EDHREC numbers. These range from thematic villainous decks like Sauron, the Dark Lord Sauron, the Dark Lord Sauron, the Dark Lord Ward—Sacrifice a legendary artifact or legendary creature.
Whenever an opponent casts a spell, amass Orcs 1.
Whenever an Army you control deals combat damage to a player, the Ring tempts you.

{8}: Each opponent sacrifices a permanent of their choice. Transform Kefka. Activate only as a sorcery.
.

Price-wise, Notion Thief is a bit of a mixed bag. The low-end value here is very low, with the base Zendikar Rising printing available for just $1.66. The card’s more premium printings, however, specifically its Special Guests and Secret Lair versions, go for $7 and $8.50, respectively. Given the high multiplier we often see on Retro Frame foils, this new Bonus Card version will likely be the most expensive yet, and possibly by a considerable margin.

Notably, with so little data from Festival in a Box Atlanta so far, we can’t say for sure whether this is a guaranteed Bonus Card for the drop or not. Given that we’ve already seen a bunch of them this year already, it could easily be another card in the ‘Retro Frame Human Bonus Cards’ pool, and therefore just a random drop here.

While every card in this pool has been white so far, this does seem more likely than it being a set Bonus Card given how Festival in a Box Bonuses have operated so far. In any case, it’s a great new Bonus overall, and one that many players will likely want to bling out their high-power Commander decks.

Reality Fracture Secret Lair Bundle Bonus Card?

Stubborn Denial Bonus Card MTG

Interestingly, the Retro Frame Notion Thief wasn’t the only new Secret Lair Bonus we got to see today. Today marks the release date of the Reality Fracture Secret Lair Bundle, and those lucky enough to nab one early have been sharing pulls from that, too. Based on this post from YT_Haruka, Stubborn Denial Stubborn Denial Stubborn Denial Counter target noncreature spell unless its controller pays {1}.

can appear within this bundle, but this seems to be either a rare find or a mistake.

Like Notion Thief, Stubborn Denial sees a ton of play, especially in Modern. Domain decks in the format run it in good numbers, since it can easily become a hard counter with Scion of Draco Scion of Draco Scion of Draco Domain — This spell costs {2} less to cast for each basic land type among lands you control.

. It also sees a ton of Commander play, too, particularly in big creature decks like The Ur-Dragon The Ur-Dragon The Ur-Dragon Eminence — As long as The Ur-Dragon is in the command zone or on the battlefield, other Dragon spells you cast cost {1} less to cast.
Flying
Whenever one or more Dragons you control attack, draw that many cards, then you may put a permanent card from your hand onto the battlefield.
and Eshki, Temur’s Roar Eshki, Temur’s Roar Eshki, Temur’s Roar Whenever you cast a creature spell, put a +1/+1 counter on Eshki. If that spell's power is 4 or greater, draw a card. If that spell's power is 6 or greater, Eshki deals damage equal to Eshki's power to each opponent. .

Notably, despite its popularity, Stubborn Denial has actually never been reprinted since its 2014 debut in Khans of Tarkir. For this reason, it’s actually worth over $5 right now on the low end, despite being an uncommon. This new version, the card’s first premium, borderless printing, will likely be worth considerably more.

While this is definitely an exciting Bonus Card, it’s unfortunately unclear how it fits into the Secret Lair Bundle. Prior to this, most assumed the Bonus Card for the Bundle would be the borderless Sphinx’s Approach Sphinx’s Approach Sphinx’s Approach Draw two cards. Then you may exile this spell and four cards named Sphinx's Approach from your graveyard. If you do, search your library for a Sphinx creature card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle.
A deck can have any number of cards named Sphinx's Approach.
, which was revealed by Wizards but not included among the 10 possible promos for the Bundle. Some players have reported opening this card in their Bundle, and in different packaging to the Stubborn Denials we’ve seen so far, which certainly raises suspicions.

Because of this, and the high collector number on this card that puts it far away from any other current Secret Lair card, it could well be a factory error, and a leak from a future drop. On the other hand, some Japanese stores have started listing the Stubborn Denial Bonus Card after cracking their Bundles, implying that it’s a consistent pull rather than a freak error. That said, we have seen widespread errors before, specifically in the case of the TMNT Prerelease leak debacle, so nothing is certain at this point.

Ultimately, until more players get their hands on Secret Lair Bundles and we have more information, we can’t say for sure where and how you’re supposed to get this new Stubborn Denial. It is a very nice reprint, however, so it’ll be one to watch when we do know more for sure.
