Unexpected MTG Secret Lair Bucks Worrying Sales Trend

Article at a Glance

Since January, Secret Lair drops have been in a bit of a sore spot. This is despite the fact the drops themselves have largely gone from strength to strength. With fantastic themes and incredibly exciting crossovers, there has been a lot to love recently. Sadly, buying these gorgeous reprints has been a lot easier said than done.

The shift to a limited-run print model has seriously thrown a spanner in the works when it comes to acquiring Secret Lairs. Since the change, one, if not more, drops have routinely sold out in a matter of hours. Unsurprisingly, the same has happened with the Camp Totally Safe Superdrop which launched yesterday.

While the trend has continued in this latest Superdrop, the pattern has shifted somewhat. Rather than one of the many Universes Beyond crossovers selling out first, that honor has gone to an artist-driven drop. Yesterday, Featuring: Peach Momoko Foil Edition became the latest Secret Lair to sell out.

Featuring: Peach Momoko Sells Out

Peach Momoko

It’s pretty remarkable that Featuring: Peach Momoko Foil Edition was the first Secret Lair drop to sell out this Superdrop. While the drop itself has absolutely fantastic art, which many players utterly adore, the value really isn’t there. There are no super exciting foils or super staples that could push up the price and desirability.

Instead, this Secret Lair drop feels like a classic drop from a few years ago. Rather than having a gimmick like Goblingram or being a Universes Beyond crossover, this drop is just nice. The art from Peach Momoko stands out and gets to shine for its own much-deserving merit. While most of the cards are decently popular in Commander, it’s almost like they don’t matter.

As much as MTG players love reprints, these aren’t the best or most consistent by any means. They may be all blue, but they’re not all destined for the same deck. Instead, this drop has a somewhat unusual memory-driven narrative which is supported by the art. While this is no bad thing, the cards are more cohesive as collectibles rather than MTG cards.

Notably, only the Foil Edition of the Featuring: Peach Momoko drop has sold out for right now. As usual, this drop selling out has triggered many of the bundles to no longer be available. It’s currently unclear which drop may sell out next, however, the non-foil variant of Featuring: Peach Momoko seems like a safe bet.

A Change of Pace?

Sadly, without hard data from Wizards of the Coast, it’s unclear what this unusual Secret Lair sale actually means. What we do know, however, is that Secret Lair drops have taken their time selling out this time around. Even Featuring: Peach Momoko Foil Edition took over 6 hours to sell out, which is a lot slower than usual.

Considering the number of Universes Beyond crossovers, it was expected that the Camp Totally Safe Superdrop would be chaos. If nothing else, the new Hatsune Miku Electric Entourage drop was expected to sell out in a matter of hours. This would follow the trend set by the past two Miku drops which were like gold dust.

This time around, both the English and Japanese variants of this drop are still available, almost one day later. If we’re hopeful, this could mean Wizards has finally adjusted print numbers to stop sales from ending so quickly. As mentioned, there’s no guarantee this is the case, not without any direct confirmation from Wizards, at least.

While unlikely, it’s entirely possible the latest Secret Lair drops just aren’t very popular. Their release has certainly been overshadowed by recent Commander developments, which may have affected things..

Ultimately, it’s still very early on in the lifespan of the Camp Totally Safe Superdrop. Should multiple drops sell out today, we may have just witnessed a slightly slower start than usual. If seemingly prized drops start lasting a few days, however, then we may have witnessed a real change. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
