Baffling Day 0 TMNT x MTG Precon Sale Is Hugely Concerning

Share

Prerelease events may have started last week, but, technically, the TMNT x MTG set doesn’t launch until tomorrow. Unfortunately, while the set does have some pretty compelling cards, it has hardly been a slam dunk. Early Limited data is already concerning, and it appears that the set is selling pretty poorly, too.

Things look so dire, in fact, that before the set has even been released, it’s now been put on sale. While day-zero sales aren’t unheard of in the wider world, recent MTG sets haven’t struggled to sell like hotcakes. It’s still early days, but this might just be that the TMNT MTG set might go down in history as a disastrous flop.

TMNT x MTG Products on Sale Already?!

Ever since The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth was released, Universes Beyond products have sold insanely well. Smashing sales records left and right, it seemed that there was no stopping these sets. Even MTG Spider Man, which was widely condemned by fans, reportedly sold better than Edge of Eternities, which was fairly beloved.

For better or worse, the same might not be true for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles MTG set. While it was clear that the pizza-heavy theme was a concern to players, there was always the expectation it would have no trouble selling. Judging by current Amazon listings for the set, however, that isn’t exactly the case.

Currently, the one and only precon from the set, Turtle Power! is being sold at a 22% discount. At MRSP, this deck should be going for $69.99; however, you can currently pick it up for just $54. This is even cheaper than TCGplayer right now, which is offering the deck for $55.

As if the precon being deeply discounted wasn’t enough, Collector Booster Boxes and the Draft Night product are also discounted. With MSRP prices being slashed by 12% and 28%, respectively, on Amazon, players can currently pick up some surprisingly impressive deals.

A Overeager Trend?

At the moment, it’s unclear why Amazon has decided to discount the MTG x TMNT set products so much so early. In theory, this could be a coordinated plan with Wizards to make the set’s release extra exciting. While this is technically possible, sales like this almost never happen, as pre-orders often sell out incredibly quickly.

Due to this, many MTG players have been speculating that the TMNT MTG set is struggling to sell. The poor performance of the set’s accompanying Secret Lair Superdrop appears to back up this theory somewhat. Unlike MTG Final Fantasy, which sold out in hours, everything in the Totally TubuLair Superdrop is still available.

So far, in fact, not a single one of these Secret Lair drops has a low stock warning. Even with Wizards getting better at forecasting demand recently, this is practically unheard of. Potentially, Wizards may have just been overzealous with printing here; however, that still means expected demand isn’t being met.

In theory, the same is happening over on Amazon, which may have overordered TMNT product. Sadly, it’s unconfirmed whether or not this is the case; however, it does seem to be a trend with Universes Beyond. Thanks to their immense potential, it almost feels like stores are forced to buy tons of product, just in case the latest crossover is the next big thing.

Potentially, this is exactly what caused MTG Spider Man to sell so well, despite being so hated. Off the back of MTG Final Fantasy, Universes Beyond seemed like a sure thing, so distributors potentially oversold the set. This, ultimately, left the market saturated, with Collector Booster Boxes now available for just $350, well under MSRP.

Very Early Days

Ultimately, while MTG players might not like the smaller Universes Beyond sets we’ve had, we don’t have all the data. For all we know, the TMNT x MTG set is selling insanely well outside of Amazon, or maybe this really is just a random promotion. Hopefully, we’ll eventually get some concrete details from an MTG designer, but we’re in the dark for now.

Unfortunately, if these smaller sets really do have a trend of underperforming, Wizards might be in trouble. From the sounds of things, there are quite a lot of small MTG sets on the release calendar going forward, throughout 2026 and beyond. If these do keep continuing to undersell and can’t be beefed up in time, Hasbro’s balance sheet might take a turn.

For better or worse, there’s no telling which way things will go right now. Hopefully, if things are dire, Wizards will be able to safely course correct sooner rather than later. Whether or not that will end up happening, however, remains to be seen.
