Over the past few days, you may have noticed a bizarre change on the MTG social channels. Rather than the usual Magic logos, we’re now seeing bright green blocks with the word ‘magic’ in lowercase. What’s going on here? Is this a tie-in for a new set? Nope, turns out this is, in fact, MTG engaging with the popular Charli XCX Brat meme that has been taking over the internet in recent months.

The Charli XCX Brat Meme And MTG

Basically, this all goes back to an album cover. English singer/songwriter Charli XCX released Brat, her sixth studio album, back in June this year. So far it has proven incredibly popular and successful. The cover chosen for this album, however, was worthy of a whole separate conversation in itself. It simply featured the word ‘brat,’ in a blurry font, on a bright green background. Simple, yet, as it turns out, incredibly effective.

The cover caused an explosion of meme activity, with fans taking pictures of random lime green objects and declaring them to be ‘brat.’ As with most memes, this spiraled into absolute nonsense fairly quickly as it gained virality. The period since the album’s launch has become known as ‘Brat Summer’ as a result. Both due to the album’s popularity and the huge number of memes surrounding the cover.

Now, two months later, MTG is jumping on the Charli XCX Brat meme bandwagon. Last Friday, WotC shared an image captioned ‘As the sun sets on Brat summer…’ on Facebook and Twitter. Featuring the word ‘Duskmourn in the font used on the album cover. It also included some barely visible art from the set in the background. A strange reference, to be sure.

It’s not just a one-off joke, however. WotC has also changed the profile pictures for the MTG social accounts to Brat parodies too, with ‘magic’ in hazy font on a green background. Either someone at the company is a big Charli XCX fan, or we’re about to get the wildest Secret Lair drop we’ve ever seen.
