Incredibly Blurry Leak Reveals MTG Duskmourn Face Commanders

Article at a Glance

It seems Wizards of the Coast may have accidentally leaked the Duskmourn: House of Horrors face Commanders. On the set’s preorder website, Wizards reportedly uploaded an image containing all four decks and their respective Commanders. While this image has since been taken down, the internet is eternal and many MTG fans grabbed screenshots and made videos.

Sadly, the image Wizards uploaded to Duskmourn’s preorder website was rather low-resolution. Due to this, looking closely at the newly revealed cards is rather difficult as everything gets incredibly blurry incredibly quickly. Despite this lack of clarity, eagle-eyed MTG players have still been able to clean some new exciting information.

Of course, as official as this looks, it is still a leak. As such, there is a chance that this could be fake. That said, it really doesn’t appear that way.

The Leak Lives On

Before Wizards of the Coast took down the accidental image, YouTuber Tauna MTG managed to sneak a peek. Thanks to this, we can all take a gander ourselves now at the new cards, or try to at least. Sadly, only two of the face Commanders are really visible, and even that is being generous.

Even if we can’t see much, the little that can be discerned is still exciting stuff.

Aminatou, Veil Protector

  • Aminatou, Veiled Protector (1WUB)
  • Legendary Creature – Human Wizard
  • At the beginning of your upkleep, surveil ?. Each enchantment card in your hand has miracle. the miracle cost is equal to its mana cost reduced by ?.

Of everything revealed by this accidental leak, Aminatou was the thing that was most shocking to the MTG community. Interestingly, it appears that Aminatou has been desparked. This is incredibly shocking for many because of how powerful Aminatou was in Magic’s lore.

For reference, Aminatou was considered by many to be the most powerful character in the MTG universe. She can basically control fate, or influence it in a way that controls others’ futures. She needs to touch them with her moths in order to do so, but from that point, your future is no longer your own. How Aminatou ignited her Spark initially is a terrifying example of this. She foresaw that she would ignite her Spark, so she simply ignited it immediately because she didn’t want to wait.

The only thing holding back Aminatou’s power up to this point was that she is an eight-year-old girl, and has the temperament of a child. It does appear that Aminatou was too powerful for Wizards of the Coast to really use her in much story-related content. The recent Desparking debacle was a great opportunity to power her down.

As far as Aminatou’s appearance in Duskmourn goes, she appears to go by the name of Aminatou, Veiled Protector. For 1WUB, Aminatou can Surveil some number of cards before you draw, enabling Miracle. Aminatou also appears to be able to grant Miracle to enchantments. Unfortunately, we don’t know how much Aminatou is able to Surveil, or what the reduction in casting cost granted by Aminatou’s Miracle is just yet.

Winter, Cynical Opportunist

Winter is a new character appearing in Duskmourn. Of all the Face Commanders we’ve seen in this leak, Winter is the one that we know the most about. This, basically, tells us all we really need to know about the Golgari Death Toll deck. Here is the card text offered by Tauna MTG, but do note that this may not be entirely accurate:

  • Winter, Cynical Opportunist, Legendary Human Warlock
  • Mana Value: 3BG
  • Stats: 2/5
  • Card Text: Deathtouch, Whenever Winter attacks, mill four cards. Delirium – At the beginning of your end step, you may exile any number of cards from your graveyard with four or more card types among them. If you do, put a permanent card from among them onto the battlefield with a Finality Counter on it.

This is a rather bizarre MTG card, to say the least. It’s rare for a Delirium card to turn itself off when using its ability, but this is exactly what Winter aims to do. While the reward for doing so can be game-breaking, this card requires a ton of setup to work properly. For five mana, this actually seems kind of awful.

Hopefully, the Death Toll deck is designed to support this Commander strongly, or there is a decent alternative Commander waiting in the wings. Right now, I am personally rather cynical about Winter, Cynical Opportunist’s potential.

The Rest

The last two Commanders do not have a lot of discernable information about them. We know that Zimone has Landfall, and her mana value only appears to be 1UG. Valogoth, Harvester of Souls seems to have an absolutely massive mana value in comparison, coming in at a suspected 7BR.

This early look at the Duskmourn Commanders was certainly unexpected. It’ll be interesting to see what other cards the new Duskmourn Commander decks have in store.
