Thanks to Marvel Super Heroes’ spoiler season being surprisingly short, we’re getting hit by lots of spoilers day after day. With all kinds of iconic heroes and villains finding their place in the world of MTG, there are tons of exciting things to look at. Even with this in mind, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is a massive standout. On top of being an iconic meme-worthy Marvel character, this looks like one of the strongest mono-green Commanders ever printed.
MTG The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is all about her activated ability. Doubling the amount of Squirrels you have in play is an incredible deal for just four mana. If that weren’t enough, unlike Krenko, Mob Boss, Squirrel Girl doesn’t even have to tap to do this, allowing you to use her ability multiple times per turn. Add on the built-in token creation when she enters and attacks, and this Commander presents a straightforward, but lethal game plan.
To help make her activated ability even stronger, cards that create lots of Squirrels can help your Commander go exponential quickly. Deranged Hermit and Deep Forest Hermit are among your best choices here, creating a board of Squirrels while buffing them all, too. While a bit slower, cards like Chittersplitter and Squirrel Sanctuary can also create a lot of Squirrels over the course of a game. Then, unique Squirrel payoffs like Nut Collector and Squirrel Mob or Typal payoffs like Coat of Arms can close the game.
Of course, since you’re primarily a token creation deck, doublers like Doubling Season and Parallel Lives are at their absolute best here. Roaming Throne is also deceptively powerful, doubling all of Squirrel Girl’s token creation abilities.
Once you have a Squirrel army created, you’ll need mana sinks for Squirrel Girl’s activated ability. If you can afford it, Gaea’s Cradle is an absolute godsend here. Failing that, Three Tree City, Evendo, Waking Haven, and Growing Rites of Itlimoc should be more than enough. You can even use tutors like Archdruid’s Charm to find these lands more consistently.
The one area where Squirrel Girl might struggle is card draw, but a few cards can help. Skullclamp is the biggest one, turning any of your 1/1 Squirrels into two fresh cards. If you don’t want to kill off your precious Squirrels, Toski, Bearer of Secrets, Shamanic Revelation, and Ohran Frostfang can draw lots of cards with a wide board.
Creating Infinite Squirrels

There are an alarming number of different ways that you can go infinite with The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Most of these require three cards, but Earthcraft and your Commander are enough, provided you control a basic land. To go truly infinite, you’ll need four Squirrels in play, but even with just The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and her created token, you only need four additional mana to get there.
Earthcraft will, essentially, allow your Squirrels to tap for a green mana, letting them pay towards The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl’s activated ability. With just Squirrel Girl and her entry token in play, you can tap both of these plus two additional mana to activate Squirrel Girl’s ability. This will create two more tokens, allowing you to repeat the process. From here, your created Squirrels will pay for Squirrel Girl’s ability, letting you go infinite. If you’re building this deck on a budget, Supportive Parents can replace Earthcraft, but you’ll need twice as many Squirrels to start going infinite.
If you add a Haste enabler, like Concordant Crossroads, into the mix, Enduring Vitality, Cryptolith Rites, and Springleaf Parade all go infinite with The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. These cards will all allow your creatures to tap for mana, netting infinite Squirrels after a few ability activations. Since all of your extra Squirrels will have Haste, you can just swing out to close the game.
