Surprise MTG Announcement Scheduled For Next Week

Share

For the past few weeks, Final Fantasy has been dominating the MTG news sphere. We’ve been getting exciting new spoilers daily, showing off iconic moments from the franchise’s many games. With Final Fantasy not scheduled to release until June 13th, it seems this set’s time in the spotlight has only just started. That said, it seems Wizards of the Coast may have a special MTG announcement up their sleeves.

MTG at Summer Games Fest?

Summer Games Fest 2025 Partners

In the lead-up to the event, Summer Games Fest has revealed the first round of its 2025 partners. As usual, this long list includes some of the biggest names in the world of gaming, many of whom will be appearing during the event. 2K, Epic Games, PlayStation, and Xbox are all primed to reveal something, so it should be an event to remember.

Within the long list of partners that have been revealed, we can see Magic: The Gathering. In theory, this means MTG will make an appearance at the event in some capacity. Considering what Wizards has in the works, this all sounds hugely exciting, however, there’s no telling what will be revealed.

While we’ll be getting to the rampant speculation shortly, there are a few concrete facts we know for now. For starters, Summer Games Fest 2025 kicks off on June 6th. The Summer Game Fest 2025 Opening Showcase is the event to watch on this day, but that’s not all there is. Summer Games Fest 2025 takes place over the entire weekend, until June 8th, so the reveals could come at any time.

Thankfully, regardless of when any MTG reveals do happen during this announcement, we’ve got you covered. So, if you want to make sure you don’t miss anything, Final Fantasy related or otherwise, just watch this space.

What Could It Be?

Unsurprisingly, once it was revealed that MTG would be at Summer Games Fest 2025 in some capacity, MTG players got to speculating. Sensibly, this speculation did come alongside the caveat that nothing will be revealed at the event, which wouldn’t be surprising. This possibility was even highlighted by VintageAnomaly, who brought the announcement to players’ attention.

“Could be nothing. Could be Arena finally coming to consoles. Or maybe that rumored Commander game.”

VintageAnomaly

Out of these three suggestions, only nothing, or the MTG Arena console release feel particularly viable. This update has long been rumored to be in development, but the development team has been pretty tight-lipped about it. Currently, it’s believed that most of the team’s development resources are being put towards Commander, but that’s a long way off.

Back in November of 2024, Wizards of the Coast emphatically stated that Commander would not launch on MTG Arena in 2025. Instead, Wizards only hopes to have hired the people required to do it by this year. This is to say that Commander probably isn’t going to launch for a couple of years at least, so I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

To dash any hopes even more, it’s worth remembering that Magic: The Gathering was on Summer Game Fest’s partner list last year. Sadly, this didn’t prelude a major announcement, as we only got a couple of Assassin’s Creed spoilers, courtesy of IGN. Potentially, this means we might see a few spoilers for Edge of Eternities, but that seems unlikely.

On top of June 6th being the kickoff date for Summer Games Fest 2025, it’s also the start of Final Fantasy prereleases. Due to this, it seems rather unlikely that Wizards would immediately start hyping up a new set so soon.

The Wait Is On

Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait and see what gets revealed next week. As much as I’d like to get my hopes up, I definitely wouldn’t expect the world. There’s a non-zero chance that MTG will only be at the event physically. Whether or not that will happen, however, remains to be seen. We’ll just have to wait and see what MTG announcement WotC has in store for us this year.
