All kinds of different MTG cards are coming out constantly. Even though we’re currently in Bloomburrow spoiler season, it may be easy to forget that Assassin’s Creed came out just a week ago. Despite the Modern legality of the set, the cards definitely appear to be meant for Commander, as they seem too weak to impact other formats they are legal in.
For that reason, a ton of Commander cards that synergize well with the new Assassin’s Creed cards are seeing a massive rise in price this week. A lot of these happen to be face Commanders to past precon strategies. Let’s take a look!
Thraximundar
Thraximundar happens to be one of the biggest Assassins in Magic: the Gathering. It also happens to be the secondary Commander for the Mind Seize reconstructed deck released back in 2013. Thraximundar costs a ton of mana but can be quite powerful if you have a way to cheat it in. That’s exactly why this card is spiking in price.
Ezio Da Firenze Auditore, once again, makes a return for Thraximundar’s price increase. If you connect with an Assassin, Ezio gives all your Assassins Freerunning for two black mana. For two mana, a 6/6 that causes a player to sacrifice a creature on attack is a massive bargain.
For players who want to grab a Thraximundar, but don’t want to pay top dollar for it, the base variants of this card are still dirt cheap. The Secret Lair iteration of this card shown above is the copy spiking in price this week. Worth $5 a week ago, this copy of Thraximundar has jumped to as high as $40! As you may expect, the Secret Lair copy of Thraximundar is much rarer than the others, which will impact a slight increase in demand much more severely.

Olivia, Opulent Outlaw
Olivia, Opulent Outlaw is the face Commander of the Most Wanted Commander deck, released as part of Outlaws of Thunder Junction. This Mardu deck focused on the Outlaw Batch, a new sort of ‘mechanic’ introduced in Outlaws of Thunder Junction.
Outlaws happen to include the Assassin and the Pirate creature types. Both of these are incredibly prevalent in the Assassin’s Creed set. Not only does this mean that the Most Wanted precon itself gets some upgrades from Wizards’ newest release, but Olivia could be a strong card in the 99 of Assassin’s Creed Commanders. Ezio Auditore da Firenze, in particular, can benefit from this card in the 99. Offering endless Treasure and buffs that play well with wide boards, Olivia can be a tyrant in any Assassin typal deck.
Over the past week, Olivia, Opulent Outlaw has jumped from $2 to $11.50 for its nonfoil version. Notably, the nonfoil version is the less expensive one since it’s included in the preconstructed deck. Nonfoils go for a little under $20.

More Assassins Spiking
Assassin’s Creed definitely seems like the flavor of the week for Commander players. Other cards, like Mari, the Killing Quill are also seeing price spikes thanks to an increased interest in Assassin typal cards.
If you’re interested in building an Assassin typal deck for yourself but are leery of all these price increases, we would simply recommend you wait a bit for the hype to die down. Once Bloomburrow takes center stage completely, Assassins will be a thing of the past. Magic moves quickly nowadays.
