Earlier today, Wizards of the Coast revealed the new dungeon-venturing mechanic from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, as well as three dungeon cards that will be released in the Dungeons & Dragons crossover Magic: The Gathering set in addition to the new MTG cards revealed today. Now, fans are wondering if you can actually draft these dungeon cards or if they need to be in your sealed deck card pool.
Today, Wizards of the Coast’s Matt Tabak has confirmed that dungeon cards will be plentiful, and players will have access to all three dungeons at all times, so you don’t need to draft them or have to have them in your sealed card pool.
This is similar to the transform checkmark cards or various MTG tokens. As long as you play a card that lets you venture into a dungeon, you can select one of the three dungeon cards that will be available with the release of Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. Of course, it would help to have actual copies of the three dungeons to keep track of the rooms you enter when you venture.
How the Dungeon-Venturing Mechanic From Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Works
The dungeon cards don’t go in your deck; they start outside the game, and they don’t take sideboard space. The new keyword Venture lets you venture through one of the three available dungeons. When you venture into a dungeon for the first time in the game, you bring a dungeon of your choice in the command zone and put a venture marker on the first room. Each time you enter a room, its room ability triggers. The next time you venture into the dungeon, you move the marker to the next room, triggering its ability. When the last room is entered and trigger its ability, you complete the dungeon.
The three dungeon cards available are:
Dungeon of the Mad Mage
Tomb of Annhilation
The Lost Mine of Phandelver
