Yesterday, during the WeeklyMTG livestream, Wizards went all out with the MTG Star Trek First Look. Showcasing exciting new spoilers, intriguing new mechanics, and pricy reprints, these previews give us plenty to look forward to. As if that weren’t enough, now, a handful of Star Trek promos have also been revealed.
MTG Convention Promos
For fans of MTG, Star Trek, and Comic-themed conventions, a group of upcoming events will now be handing out promos. The first available promo, attendees of San Diego Comic Con July 23rd-26th or Star Trek Las Vegas August 5th-9th can get their hands on a Kirk, Enterprising Captain promo. Although the card is relatively mediocre in terms of power level, its overall scarcity may still help Kirk maintain some decent value.
A far stronger card mechanically, Borg Queen, Perfection Manifest’s promo will be available at New York Comic Con from November 13th-15th. Offering a board-wide buff for artifact creatures and the new insane Assimilate mechanic, it’ll be well worth watching to see if this promo appears at any other events.
Notably, in addition to new cards, reprints of Explore and Fact or Fiction are also coming to MagicCon: Atlanta between November 13th-15th. Despite being rather disappointing from a financial standpoint, these cards’ Commander popularity could mean that their rarer printings have some value.
MTG Play Promos
For players who don’t want to shell out money to travel, there’s also a collection of play promos that can be picked up locally. All participants at any WPN Commander events will earn a copy of either Highly Illogical or Munitions Enthusiast. Neither card seems amazing, but versatile counterspells and ways to ping down mana dorks have value in certain metagames.
Once again, while these new cards take the spotlight, there are two reprints to look forward to as well. Participants of the Magic Presents: To Boldly Go events will walk away with the Commander staple Solemn Simulacrum promo for their efforts. Then, for more competitive players looking to immerse themselves in Standard, promo copies of Burst Lightning will be given to Standard Showdown winners.
Ultimately, while these sub-$0.30 promos don’t jump off the page, they do see lots of play, giving them many potential homes. If you’re interested in acquiring any of the promos listed here, be sure to mark these dates on your calendars and stay tuned here for more information.
