Wizards Confirms Two New In-Universe 2026 MTG Sets

Share

The Magic Con: Las Vegas preview panel just ended, and while we didn’t end up getting a massive amount of spoilers, there is a lot of news to digest. In addition to the few spoilers from multiple sets and a major Commander rules change, we also got a new Draft format and a few new MTG sets to speculate about.

Considering that, after Edge of Eternities, we have two Universes Beyond sets, it’s great to see that two In-Universe MTG sets are next on the docket. In addition to Lorwyn’s release date finally being confirmed, Wizards of the Coast has officially revealed the name of our return trip to Strixhaven.

Lorwyn Eclipsed Release Date Confirmed

We’ve known for a while now that 2026’s first MTG set was a return to Lorwyn, but we didn’t really know what the set was called, or when it was coming. Lorwyn Eclipsed has been confirmed to release on January 23rd, 2026.

For a new set, this is incredibly early. For the past few years, a Remastered set was the first thing MTG players got to open. This could suggest that Remastered sets are off the docket for 2026. Considering the major push we’re seeing towards Universes Beyond sets, it makes a lot of sense. Remastered sets, at the end of the day, were just fancy reprints. The more new content, the better, if you ask us.

Notably, Lorwyn Eclipsed will also pick up the main story after Tarkir: Dragonstorm’s massive cliffhanger. That means we’ll have over 6 months of Magic without the main being directly mentioned, which is incredibly bizarre. It will be interesting to see what Lorwyn Eclipsed has in store.

Lorwyn is also a plane that MTG fans have been dying to revisit for a really long time. It’s been over 17 years since Lorwyn was originally released, and we finally get to return in full form.

For now, that’s all we know about Lorwyn Eclipsed, but what we’ve seen is really promising. It’s great to see a quick adjustment to accommodate the rise of Universes Beyond in Magic: The Gathering. There’s certainly a worry that in-universe sets will be lost in the new world, but this small return to roots is great to see.

Secrets of Strixhaven

Secrets of Strixhaven is the next new in-universe set revealed by Wizards of the Coast today at MagicCon: Las Vegas. We didn’t get a lot of details for Lorwyn Eclipsed, but we literally have no details about Secrets of Strixhaven at all.

All we know is that a return to Magic’s take on magical school is in session. We don’t know when or how that return will manifest yet. Heck, we don’t even have artwork for the set yet. We do know for certain, however, that this is coming at some point in 2026.

Players should expect fan-favorite characters like Dina, Quintorius Kand, and Zimona to make a return. Dragon fans are also likely to get some interesting cards to play with between the five Dragons that are responsible for each Strixhaven faction.

Ultimately, the only new reveal here is this set’s name, as we’ve known a return to Strixhaven was coming since 2023. Despite this, it’s always great to see what’s coming up in Magic’s future more concretely. If the original School of Mages set was anything to go by, this 2026 return should be a lot of fun.

Upcoming Magic Cons and Spotlight Series Announcement

Before we wrap things up, there are also some announcements regarding upcoming in-person events for MTG in 2026. Not only do we have three new MagicCons coming up, but a new Spotlight Series announcement should excite competitive fans.

12 Spotlight Series events have officially been confirmed for 2026, but we don’t know where or when they will be yet. Only a vague promise of the series reaching to even more areas around the globe has been mentioned.

Moving on to MagicCons, three MagicCon events have been confirmed for 2026. In an unexpected twist, there will be one MagicCon taking place outside of the U.S., which is incredibly exciting for European fans. Here are the dates for the three announced 2026 Magic Con events:

  • MagicCon: Las Vegas: May 1st-3rd,
  • MagicCon Amsterdam Jul. 17th-19th, 2026
  • Magic Con Atlanta Nov. 13th-15th, 2026
