For many players, Magic: The Gathering holds a special place in their hearts. The combination of strategy and unique gameplay makes MTG enjoyable and repeatable when compared to other trading card games.
At the same time, though, it can always be fun to try different games for the sake of variety. Luckily, for anyone looking to try their hand at something entirely new, it appears that Wizards is unveiling a unique card game at MagicCon: Las Vegas in May.
A Fun New Experience

According to MTG head designer Mark Rosewater via his Blogatog page, there will be a four-hour window each day Friday through Sunday at MagicCon: Las Vegas for players to try out a new card game created by Wizards of the Coast. The game was specifically designed by Mark Rosewater himself to bring a fast, experimental play experience to your table.
While we have very limited official information to go on, this hasn’t stopped players from speculating about the details of this card game. There’s a lot of clamoring that this could finally be the arrival of Mood Swings, a card game that Mark Rosewater designed back in 1998. Despite being well-liked by many Wizards employees, Mark was never fortunate enough to have the game published.
This clearly didn’t deter Mark Rosewater’s drive, however, as he posted to Blogatog in July of 2024 stating that he planned to get it to print eventually. With games lasting five minutes on average and requiring no deckbuilding, Mood Swings does seem to fit the fast-paced description of the new game.
Some other players are predicting that this announcement could have something to do with a Duel Masters variant coming to the United States. Unfortunately, while this idea may not seem far-fetched, Rosewater stated in January that obtaining an English version of Duel Masters was unlikely due to past failures. Rosewater also mentioned that this card game is an entirely new release, which makes this even less likely.
All of that said, this is all purely speculative at this stage. For all we know, this new game could turn out to be something entirely different. Regardless, it’s nice to see an experimental card game from Wizards getting the light of day. If you’re interested in trying the game for yourself, Mark Rosewater will be running events at Magic Con: Las Vegas on Friday at 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm, Saturday at 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm, and Sunday at 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm.
