It’s not too often that a brand new Trading Card Game comes along and makes an impact, so when Flesh & Blood did just that, our interest was piqued.
We’re going to take you through the basics so you have an idea of what Flesh & Blood is and what it’s looking to achieve. It is just a Magic: The Gathering clone or something completely unique?
Flesh & Blood: Origins
Flesh & Blood is a trading card game first released in 2019. It’s published by Legend Story Studios who are based on New Zealand. The aim of releasing this game was to fight back against the trend of online TCGs by putting the focus entirely on in-person play.
There have been six unique set releases so far;
- Welcome to Rathe – October 2019
- Arcane Rising – March 2020
- Crucible of War – August 2020
- Monarch – April 2021
- Tales of Aria – September 2021
- Everfest – February 2022
The game’s popularity has grown exponentially in recent months and it has caught the attention of many high-level Magic players. Soon, the first-ever Flesh & Blood Pro Tour will take place where the best of the best will compete in a 3-day tournament.
How it plays
Flesh & Blood follows a few standard TCG tropes such as 60-card decks and limiting the number of copies you may have of any one card. Other than this, it’s a very unique experience. Rounds last 50 minutes and if no winner is determined within this time, three additional turns are taken before the match ends in a draw.
Gameplay is based around picking a Hero card and using that card’s class or talent to build a deck around. You’ll be looking to equip your Hero with the best gear possible and attack the opposing Hero to reduce their life points and win.
There is no energy or land system, taking away a large part of the luck and randomness involved in games like Magic. If you fancy trying out something new or aren’t liking the direction that MTG is heading in, be sure to dive deeper into the game mechanics and head to your LGS to playtest!
