Despite only introducing 59 new mechanically unique cards, Mystery Booster: Commander Edition is one of the richest MTG sets we’ve seen in a while. The new Commanders are largely lore deep cuts and are extremely interesting designs mechanically to boot. Among this exemplary batch, Uugguu, the Omniplasm stands out as one of the most intriguing, offering Ooze Typal synergies and truly wild Clone lines.
Uugguu, The Omniplasm MTG
With Uugguu’s nifty Ooze-splitting effect, it pushes Ooze Typal decks in a way no Commander has before. It’s trivial to build an unstoppable board of Oozes here using lords like Biowaste Blob, and utility pieces like Acidic Slime. To get the most out of these alongside Uugguu, you’ll also want sacrifice outlets like Altar of Dementia and Greater Good to split your Oozes on demand.
While Uugguu is initially limited to just Oozes, you can easily expand its scope with cards like Maskwood Nexus or March of the World Ooze. This lets you rope in non-Ooze value creatures like Eternal Witness, and alternative finishers like Gray Merchant of Asphodel. Regardless of whether you’re using these non-Ooze synergies, token doublers like Parallel Lives make Uugguu that much scarier.
To really maximize Uugguu’s potential, however, you’ll want to combine it with Clone effects. By copying Uugguu with something like Phantasmal Image, you can create two non-legendary copies of your Commander. This turbocharges Uugguu’s already strong Ooze synergies, and also opens up the door for Blood Artist combo kills if you can re-cast it repeatedly for more tokens.
Despite looking like a one-trick pony initially, Uugguu, the Omniplasm is actually surprisingly malleable. Whether you want to drown opponents in value or go for a combo win, this is a powerful and flexible Sultai Commander option.
