$42 cEDH Icon Gets First-Ever Reprint In MTG Final Fantasy

Through the Ages is looking absolutely stacked!

Though the last few days have been fairly light on main set Final Fantasy spoilers, it’s been all systems go for the Through the Ages Bonus Sheet. We’ve seen pricey staples and Magic: The Gathering icons added to the sheet, giving it a ton of value right out of the gate. Today, that trend continued, as Wizards revealed the Final Fantasy versions of both Tymna and Thrasios.

These cards are mega-staples in the cEDH format, and both are fairly expensive to boot. Seeing them on a Bonus Sheet like this is great news. They were joined by a swath of other reveals that push us over the halfway mark in terms of Through the Ages reveals. While the art and framing here may not be to everyone’s taste, it’s hard to deny the value on offer.

Tymna And Thrasios In Final Fantasy

Tymna and Thrasios Final Fantasy

The clear highlights of today’s Final Fantasy Through the Ages reveals were Tymna and Thrasios. Those unfamiliar with cEDH may not be aware of these cards, but in that format, they’re one of the best Commander combinations you can play. This isn’t necessarily down to the cards themselves, though both are good. Instead, players run the duo because it gives access to four colors of mana. In cEDH, where fixing and fast mana are easy to come by, your range of colors is everything.

Tymna is the most exciting half of this duo, represented here as Final Fantasy IV’s Cecil. Rosa would’ve arguably been a better fit, but Through the Ages includes every game’s main protagonist, so Cecil does make sense. This card has actually never been reprinted since its Commander 2016 debut, outside of an ultra-rare Commander Legends etched foil version that doesn’t really count.

Due to this, the cheapest you’re going to find the card is around $42 right now. This Bonus Sheet version should bring that down a fair bit, since it’s only a rare. This is also the first time you’ can get’ll be able to get Tymna in non-foil, which is great for those wary of card curling.

Thanks to a Special Guest printing in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, Thrasios is half the price of Tymna at around $21. While this printing should bring that price down a bit, it’s worth noting that Thrasios is a mythic rare in Through the Ages. This means it’ll show up much less often (around 7% of the time you pull a Bonus Sheet card), but it’s still a fantastic reprint to see.

Hall Of Heroes

Tymna and Thrasios Final Fantasy Commander Classics

Tymna and Thrasios aside, today also saw a bunch of other Final Fantasy Through the Ages cards revealed. Many of these are powerful legendary creatures, including some bona-fide Commander classics.

Leading the charge in this category is Najeela, the Blade Blossom, repurposed as Cloud Strife for the sheet. This is actually a very viable cEDH Commander too, thanks to its sneaky five-color identity. IT’s also very easy to go infinite with and end the game. The card goes for around $8 on the low end right now, so it’s a solid reprint.

Isshin, Two Heavens as One is in a similar boat. While it doesn’t have much of a cEDH presence, it’s a top-tier option in casual Commander. With all the Mardu support in Tarkir: Dragonstorm, it just got a big boost, too. Perhaps this accounts for its current price tag of around $5.

Jodah, the Unifier is also coming to Through the Ages as a very stylish rendition of Final Fantasy I’s Warrior of Light. Like Isshin, this is a very popular choice in casual Commander. It’s a bit cheaper at $3, but it’s still a great addition to the sheet.

Tymna and Thrasios Final Fantasy Cheaper Cards

The other legends revealed for Through the Ages today are a bit less exciting. We have an Emet Selch version of K’rriik, which goes for around $1 despite being one of the best Mono-Black legends in the format. Emet is a popular character, however, so there could be some extra value in that alone.

We also saw Venser, Shaper Savant, a $1 card, and Mangara the Diplomat, a $0.50 card. Mangara is a nice draw option for white in Commander, but honestly, neither of these is worth writing home about. Unless it’s about the artwork, which is stunning in all three cases.

Odds And Ends

Through the Ages Artifacts

It’s not just legendary creatures like Tymna and Thrasios on the Final Fantasy Through the Ages Bonus Sheet, of course. There are other card types represented here, too, a few of which we saw in today’s reveals.

Alongside Thrasios, we saw a pair of artifacts in Smuggler’s Copter and Strixhaven Stadium. Both are about $1 in value on the low end, but they are still interesting picks. Smuggler’s Copter is a long way from its glory days of getting banned in Standard, but it sees some regular play in Pioneer and as a discard engine in certain Commander decks.

Strixhaven Stadium is one of the weirder mana rocks out there, creating a kind of mini-game that can instantly knock an opponent out if you play it right. It’s a great option in casual Commander games, but a bit too slow for anything bracket two or above.

Through the Ages Spells

Rounding out today’s reveals, we have a couple of nice red spells. Lightning Bolt is an all-time classic, so no real introductions are needed there. It’s a $0.50, but one that sees play in pretty much every format somewhere. The fact that Thundaga or a similar spell from the series wasn’t chosen as the framing is wild to me, but the art here is solid regardless.

Mizzix’s Mastery is much more niche, really only seeing play in casual spellslinger decks in Commander. I is a very flashy finisher, however, and doubly so with that excellent Toshitaka Matsuda artwork. That may not make up for opening this over Tymna in your rare slot, but it is at least something.
