Unexpected Character Appears on MTG Foundations Product

Share

All of the information we’ve had about MTG Foundations is stuff that has been available to the community for some time. That said, since a majority of the info available isn’t something flashy, like a bunch of new spoilers, it’s easy for something to go unnoticed for more time than it should have. That seems to be the case with the Bundle artwork that was revealed for MTG Foundations.

Despite having the artwork available for quite some time now, many MTG players didn’t actually take the time to see what the image depicts. Not only will we get an unexpected character in MTG Foundations, but we may even get to see what Tinybones looked like when he was still alive.

Tinybones, the Living and Breathing

Even though this product image has been in circulation for quite some time, Tinybones’ presence in the image was only recently noted. Once mentioned, MTG Reddit took off with speculation.

As we all know, one aspect of Tinybones’ recent appearances is that he is basically a tiny skeleton. This image suggests something totally different. Instead of being bone without any skin, this iteration of Tinybones appears to be alive.

“The art makes it seem this is who Tinybones was before death maybe? Look at the limbs, it’s all solid connected joints and muscle, not bones. Skull face seems like a mask.”

The stark contrast to Tinybones’ past appearances sent players ablaze. Not only does Tinybones appear to be alive, but the mischievous chap seems to have stolen items that are quintessential to various Planeswalkers throughout Magic’s Lore. It appears that Tinybones has somehow gotten his little mitts on Jace’s cloak, Chandra’s goggles, Vivian’s Bow, and more. The list goes on and on:

“Yes it does look different, and it kinda looks like he stole a peice of jaces cloak , and ajanis weapon .”

“Oh now you mentioned it I see Chandra’s goggles, Vivien’s Bow, Ajani’s double axe, Jace’s cloak, and The Chainveil”

Other comments mention the appearance of Ral’s Gauntlet, Zimone’s journal, and more.

Some players have come to speculate that these items could give a hint as to what Tinybones’ abilities will be if/when they appear in MTG Foundations. Maybe this little thief will be unblockable by legendary creatures and Planeswalkers.

Tinybones’ Past Appearances

Tinybones, the Pickpocket | Outlaws of Thunder Junction

So far, we’ve had Tinybones appear twice in Magic: The Gathering. The first appearance was in Jumpstart. The card was a Mythic Rare, and one of the few mechanically unique cards that appeared in that set.

Notably, this set was released during the Covid days, so for a time, any of the mechanically unique MTG Jumpstart cards were incredibly expensive due to scarcity. Tinybones was no exception. Eventually, supply eventually caught up to demand. Now, Tinybones, Trinket Thief is only worth about $10, but there is a Secret Lair reprint of him available worth about twice the price.

Notably, if you want Tinybones, Trinket Thief in foil, the Secret Lair printing is the only way to find it.

Tinybones’ most recent appearance as of the writing of this article was in Outlaws of Thunder Junction. Pictured above, Tinybones, the Pickpocket had massive expectations right after its release. Thanks to its similarity to Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, many players had massive expectations for the one-mana menace.

Sadly, those expectations did not end up panning out. Regardless, this $6 card can still be a massive beating in Commander if someone is foolish enough to leave it unblocked.

Will Tinybones Appear in MTG Foundations?

It certainly seems like Tinybones will make an appearance in Magic’s newest set, but there is no guarantee that Tinybones will be one of the few mechanically unique cards in this reprint-focused set. Heck, there technically isn’t even confirmation that the character on the MTG Foundations bundle art is even Tinybones.

Players seem certain that this bizarre enigma with possession over various important items to MTG Planeswalkers is Tinybones, however. It certainly makes sense. This critter is the most infamous thief in the known Multiverse!
