Article at a Glance

Monday’s ban announcement was almost exactly what players wanted. Between Rakdos Vampires haunting Pioneer, Nadu, Winged Wisdom dominating Modern, and Legacy players being forced under Grief’s foot, a lot of players were unhappy. Thankfully, bans addressed all of these problems. This means that a lot of old decks that were suppressed by the power of these broken strategies will rise. Through the Breach is one strategy that this applies to.

Ugin’s Labyrinth was an absolutely incredible land from Modern Horizons 3, but everything ended up in the shadow of Nadu, Winged Wisdom. Now that the bird is gone, it is time to see how powerful this land really was intended to be. Now, we get to play Modern Horizons 3 as intended.

22 Power on Turn 3

Through the Breach | Ultimate Masters
  • Mana Value: 4R
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Card Type: Instant – Arcane
  • MTG Sets: Ultimate Masters, Champions of Kamigawa
  • Card Text: You may put a creature card from your hand onto the battlefield. That creature gains haste. Sacrifice that creature at the beginning of the next end step. Splice into Arcane (2RR)

Thanks to Ugin’s Labyrinth, Through the Breach is capable of executing some absolutely ridiculous stuff. Assembling five mana on turn three, between Ugin’s Labyrinth and other accelerators, is not as hard as you may think. Through the Breach can cheat out an Emrakul, the Promised End on turn three, which should be enough to end most games on the spot.

Believe it or not, this isn’t even the scariest thing that Through the Breach is capable of. If you Imprint an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn in exile on your Ugin’s Labyrinth, it makes a new Eldrazi Titan even more terrifying. Because Emrakul is in exile, Ulamog, the Defiler can see it. This means that Ulamog will enter the battlefield with 15 +1/+1 counters on it, which also translates to Annihilator 15. Through the Breach can cheat this in on turn three, ending any opponent in quick fashion.

Thanks to the rise of Through the Breach Eldrazi in Modern, this card is beginning to see massive price spikes. Worth only $2 over the weekend, Through the Breach is starting to sell for $10 pretty consistently. Outlier sales are beginning to push past $11.

As far as early results go, Through the Breach placed second in the first Modern Challenge 64 on Magic Online following the bans on Monday. In the 32 Challenge, it placed 3rd and 11th. This suggests that Through the Breach Eldrazi will be one of the better strategies going into the early post-ban Modern format.

Harness the Power of Eldrazi

It’s a great time to be an Eldrazi fan. The creature type looks to be one of the best decks in both the Modern and Legacy formats, and players are cashing in on the hype. Through the Breach is back, and players who never had a speeding Emrakul hit them out of nowhere are going to know what that feels like.
