Over the past few days, we have been getting absolutely bombarded with new MTG content. As if the Star Trek First Look and Secret Lair Superdrop previews weren’t enough, Wizards is now showing off a bunch of cards from The Hobbit. This upcoming set seems extremely flavorful right from the jump, and the Dwarvish Language cards and box toppers are a big reason why.
Dwarvish Language Cards
Back on May 1st, Wizards revealed that a special selection of five cards featuring Dwarvish Language text would be potential Collector Booster pulls in The Hobbit. Arcane Signet was highlighted as one initial option, and now, the other four cards have been showcased.
From a reprint value perspective, Mox Amber takes the cake as the chase card of the bunch. This free mana rock sees play in 433,000 Commander decks according to EDHREC, and this number would likely be far higher if it weren’t for the $75 price tag. Add in the card’s competitive Constructed appeal in various Emry, Lurker of the Loch decks, and there’s no shortage of demand.
While Mox Amber is certainly the headliner of Dwarish Language cards, The Reaver Cleaver is also a solid selection. This card is a staple of Equipment Commander decks, ending games with infinite combats alongside Aggravated Assault. Holding a reprint value of $15, this card will surely be a satisfying Collector Booster pull.
After that, there’s a pretty big financial drop-off for Dwarvish Language cards. Treasure Vault is a decent utility land in Commander, but nothing special. Yet, even that’s more than you can say about Dwarven Warriors, which is primarily just a piece of filler for Magda, Brazen Outlaw decks. Nonetheless, these choices are flavorful, and overall scarcity of these variants could drive up prices, especially for foils.
Box Toppers
To make the product opening experience even more enthralling, each Play and Collector Booster Box will feature a foil box topper. While a bunch of the potential pulls have yet to be revealed, we’ve got a glimpse at some elite LOTR staples.
For Modern, Legacy, and Commander players alike, the reprinting of Orcish Bowmasters should be a welcome sight. This efficient Orc Archer kills mana dorks, punishes opposing card draw spells, and combos with Wheel effects all at the same time. Currently, picking up a copy costs over $48, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the box topper sells for less.
Beyond expensive cards from the main LOTR set, these box toppers also show off some pricy scene box exclusive cards. New versions of both Call Forth the Tempest and Galadriel’s Dismissal have been revealed, two cards whose exclusivity primarily drove up their price tags. Hopefully, these elite Commander cards become more affordable moving forward.
Unfortunately, while there are certainly some heavy hitters among the box topper reprints, there are also some duds. Reprieve, despite its strengths as a white Remand, is just an uncommon worth under $2. Even some of the rare reprints, like The Shire and Rivendell, are pretty unexciting options to open.
Nonetheless, box toppers as a whole are always a nice inclusion alongside booster boxes. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for any other potential pulls that get revealed in the future.
