The official debut for Tarkir: Dragonstorm has been packed with reveal after reveal. We’ve seen some insanely powerful cards, plenty of new mechanics, and all of the new Commanders too. As if that wasn’t enough, we’ve even been treated to ten whole reprints to get excited about!
Admittedly, ten reprints might not sound like a whole lot and technically that’s the truth. That being said, the new Special Guests for Tarkir: Dragonstorm are nonetheless worth getting excited about. Containing half of two different cycles, we’re getting fancy fresh Fetch Lands and Ultimatums very soon!
Tarkir: Dragonstorm Fetch Land Reprints
As many MTG players theorized, we are indeed getting Fetch Land reprints in Tarkir: Dragonstorm. This makes a lot of sense, given that the original Khans of Tarkir reprinted half of this cycle back in 2014. Weirdly, that’s not the half of the Fetch Land cycle that we’re getting in Tarkir: Dragonstorm.
Instead, we’re getting reprints of the Fetch Lands from 2009’s Zendikar instead. This helps to round out the plane’s collection of lands while giving us some spicy reprints too. At worst, each of these lands is worth around $20, making them a fantastic set of reprints. Unsurprisingly, like all Fetch Lands, these cards see extensive play in Modern, Legacy, and even Vintage.
For better or worse, since these reprints are coming as Special Guests, their current legality won’t be affected. As fun as it would be to have Fetch Lands in Standard again, Wizards isn’t quite ready to jump that shark, it seems. Instead, these cards are simply great reprints that shouldn’t cause any trouble.
Beyond being a nice valuable addition to Play Boosters, these Fetch Lands also have a Collector Booster exclusive variant. Appearing exclusively on the five Special Guest Fetch Lands, Dragonscale is a brand-new foiling technique that looks absolutely stunning. The Dragonscale foil variants of these cards are also getting unique art, to further set them apart.
As you might expect, these Collector Booster exclusive Fetch Lands are likely going to sell for a lot of money. Sadly, the exact pull rate of this card treatment has not yet been announced.
Special Guest Ultimatums
Since we’re only getting five of the ten Fetch Lands in Tarkir: Dragonstorm, there’s room for even more Special Guests. Specifically, there’s room for another half of a different cycle that matches Tarkir’s general vibe. In case the subheading didn’t give it away, we’re getting the five Ultimatums from Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths.
Unfortunately, while each of these Ultimatums is a massive explosive spell, they’re not all financial powerhouses. Prices range from $0.22 at worst to $3.83 at best. Compared to the Fetch Lands, these reprints aren’t nearly as exciting. That being said, these cards are mostly still playable, at least.
Out of the bunch, Eerie Ultimatum is easily the most exciting and iconic card from this half of the Ultimatum cycle. Being able to reanimate any number of differently named threats from your graveyard is a huge explosive swing. So long as you’ve got enough massive TBH effects in the bin, this card can win you the game outright.
Similarly, Ruinous Ultimatum is a potential finisher that’s fantastic for Commander and not much else. Dropping this spell should leave your opponents unprotected enough that you can easily waltz in for the win. Unsurprisingly, each of these Ultimatums has game-ending potential with just a little bit of setup. It’s almost like they’re seven-mana spells or something…
Provided you can get enough three-color fixing, each of these Ultimatums could secure you the win in Tarkir: Dragonstorm limited. While you won’t find them often in Play Boosters, they’ll nonetheless be worth watching out for.
Tarkir: Dragonstorm Special Guest Prices
Last, but by no means least, it’s worth going over the actual prices for the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Special Guests. That said, we can only look at the raw reprint prices, right now at least, since the set isn’t actually out yet. It’ll only be once Tarkir: Dragonstorm properly releases that we’ll know how expensive each of these cards is.
Since they are reprints, there’s a non-zero chance that these new printings will help to bring prices down somewhat. This would be good news for Fetch Land enjoyers, however, Special Guests are hardly the most widely printed cards. If any of these reprints do actually affect the market price of cards, it likely won’t be by much.
Of course, as we mentioned earlier, there’s also the Collector Booster exclusive Dragonscale Fetch Lands to look out for. These are near-enough guaranteed to be more expensive than normal Fetch Lands, but it’s unclear by how much. Right now, the most expensive Fetch Land is the Zendikar Expedition Polluted Delta which sells for $231. Potentially, the Dragonscale foils could challenge this price point.
For now, here are the currently available prices for each of the new Tarkir: Dragonstorm Special Guests.
