Even though Bloomburrow has been in players’ hands for some time now, it’s still managing to surprise us. Not only are new archetypes popping up across Magic’s myriad constructed formats, but seemingly skipped-over cards are spiking too. Most recently, Fortune Teller’s Talent from Bloomburrow Commander has seen a sudden 360% spike thanks to its remarkable rarity.
Fortune Teller’s Talent
- Mana Value: U
- Rarity: Rare
- Text: (Gain the next level as a sorcery to add its ability.)
Level 1 – You may look at the top card of your library any time.
{3}{U}: Level 2 – As long as you’ve cast a spell this turn, you may play cards from the top of your library.
{2}{U}: Level 3 – Spells you cast from anywhere other than your hand cost {2} less to cast.
On the surface, Fortune Teller’s Talent is a pretty decent but unassuming card. Found in the Family Matters precon, this card doesn’t really help the deck’s Offspring-based archetype, but it is good. Getting to look at the top card of your library, and eventually cast cards off of it, is always a useful effect.
This utility is the real star quality of Fortune Teller’s Talent. While it may not be a dedicated Offspring card, it’s simply good and fits in many different archetypes. On its own, this detail could have this card commanding a fairly respectable price point as Commander players eagerly pick it up. Fortune Teller’s Talent, however, has an ace up its sleeves.
Unlike the vast majority of Bloomburrow Commander cards, Fortune Teller’s Talent can’t be found anywhere else. Typically, new Commander cards also appear in Collector Boosters, often with fancy foil or alternative art variants. For whatever reason, the same isn’t true for Fortune Teller’s Talent as this card is only in the Family Matters preconstructed deck.
Compared to other Commander cards, this means there will be notably less supply available to meet demand. In theory, this makes the price somewhat more volatile and prone to spikes, as we’re seeing now. That being said, Commander precons are very popular and well-printed products, so this is hardly a Reserved List card.
Despite the popularity of precons, Fortune Teller’s Talent has still seen a substantial spike. Over the past few days, this card has jumped from $1 to just under $5. Using exact sales data, this card has seen a 361% price spike which is very commendable. As alluded to earlier, there are no special variants or foil printings of this card currently available.
Talented Talents
- Mana Value: 3R
- Rarity: Rare
- Text: (Gain the next level as a sorcery to add its ability.)
Level 1 – When Alchemist’s Talent enters, create two tapped Treasure tokens.
{1}{R}: Level 2 – Treasures you control have “{T}, Sacrifice this artifact: Add two mana of any one color.”
{4}{R}: Level 3 -Whenever you cast a spell, if mana from a Treasure was spent to cast it, this Class deals damage equal to that spell’s mana value to each opponent.
For better or worse, Fortune Teller’s Talent isn’t the only bizarrely rare Bloomburrow Commander card. Curiously, the four new Commander-exclusive Talent cards can each only be found in their respective precons. Unlike Fortune Teller’s Talent, however, the other three cards in this cycle have yet to see substantial price spikes.
The lack of financial movement is likely due to some of these cards not being nearly as good. Specifically, Fisher’s Talent and Gourmand’s Talent don’t have the same ubiquitous utility empowering their financial prospects. While both these cards are good, especially at Level 3, they’re hardly an option for every Commander deck.
Alchemist’s Talent is another story entirely, however. At Level 2, this card doubles the mana produced by every Treasure you control. Considering the ubiquity of Treasures in Commander, it’s safe to say Alchemist’s Talent is pretty strong. It even has a third level that dishes out damage to sweeten the deal.
Currently, Alchemist’s Talent has yet to see a huge price spike, but it’s already an expensive card. Selling for around $5.50 on TCGplayer, this card is the most valuable Bloomburrow Commander Talent at the moment. Should the supply of this card dry up, expect this price to spike fast since Alchemist’s Talent can be played in so many decks.
