Eight-Mana Final Fantasy MTG Saga Spikes 448%

One of the many cool designs in Final Fantasy MTG is the collection of Summons. There is a plethora of these Saga creatures throughout the set, and some of them have abilities that can singlehandedly take over games.

Thanks to some powerful synergies, one particular eight mana Summon has risen in price significantly over the last two weeks. Don’t let its hefty mana cost fool you. There are a handful of ways to abuse this Saga, and its high price tag reflects that.

Summon: Knights of Round

Summon: Knights of Round

Summon: Knights of Round has five chapters, four of which do the exact same thing: produce three 2/2 Knight tokens.

This is undoubtedly a powerful effect that threatens to end the game in short order. Summon: Knights of Round even has Indestructible, meaning traditional removal spells won’t stop you from building out a huge army in no time. The key is being able to support an eight-mana card.

The reality is that casting this card straight up isn’t realistic in a Constructed setting. However, a few different archetypes have arisen in Standard and Pioneer that all look to cheat Summon: Knights of Round into play in one form or fashion.

In Standard, some players have found success brewing around Yuna, Hope of Spira. The goal is to discard Summon: Knights of Round via cards like Fear of Missing Out, then jam Yuna and resurrect Summon: Knights of Round at the beginning of your end step. Yuna has Ward 2 during your turn, so there’s a good chance you’ll make it to your end step unscathed and get your value.

Another common method of cheating Summon: Knights of Round into play is to use Abuelo’s Awakening. Summon: Knights of Round sometimes makes an appearance in Azorius Omniscience combo as a backup win condition.

This huge Saga even made a recent appearance in a Pioneer Boros Monument deck. This deck features a bunch of discard outlets to help maximize Monument to Endurance, so adding Summon: Knights of Round and Abuelo’s Awakening into the mix isn’t an unreasonable idea.

In addition to the card’s Constructed appeal, Summon: Knights of Round is also a solid addition to any Saga Commander deck, such as those built around Tom Bombadil. Ramping to Summon: Knights of Round in Commander is much more reasonable, and it’s one of the beefiest Sagas out there to put into play via Tom Bombadil’s final ability.

Summon: Knights of Round Spike

From a financial perspective, Summon: Knights of Round has gone through some major fluctuations. While the card was technically worth over $40 at one point, this was only due to hugely inflated presale prices. As we got closer and closer to June, the market price according to TCGplayer would continue to plummet. By June 3, Summon: Knights of Round had decreased all the way to $3.10.

However, this number would start to increase over the coming days as hype for the Saga continued to grow. After a quick zenith hit on June 12th, at $29.62, Summon: Knights of Round landed at about $17.

This surge in price is likely caused in part by an increase in demand. On June 6 alone, over 60 separate sales went through for traditional copies of Summon: Knights of Round. A lot of people also bought the slight dip on Summon: Knights of Round, with 260 items selling on June 13th.

The borderless version of Summon: Knights of Round followed a similar trend, where more sales took place on June 6 than the prior week combined. Borderless copies of Summon: Knights of Round would increase from roughly $16 to over $28 on June 12, where Summon: Knights of Round’s price would “peak” once again (ignoring massively inflated presale price points).

The Future

We see a very strange pattern with this particular card: a massive amount of people bought into a sudden dip that occurred just yesterday as of the writing of this article. This suggests that Summon: Knights of Round’s price spike many continue in the coming days. The recent spike in demand trumps the demand that caused this card to spike in the first place. The borderless copies of Summon: Knights of Round follow the same pattern.

Notably, this could be due to the official MTG Final Fantasy release date coming and going. That occurred on June 12th, which could mean that a massive influx of singles just hit the secondary market. So, while demand for Summon: Knights of Round are higher than we’ve seen it, supply could be matching it. The current 147 copies available on TCGplayer heavily suggests that this is the case.

Summon: Knights of Round’s financial future will, therefore, likely depend on how much demand the card continues to see. If another 260 copies are sold today, this card’s price spike might continue. At this point, however, that’s looking unlikely.
