Rogue MTG Product Listings Seemingly Reveal Star Trek Universes Beyond Set

Share
Set phasers to fun!

With Edge of Eternities just a few weeks away, Magic: The Gathering is preparing to take its first giant leap into the sci-fi genre. This is a big break from the fantasy norm, so naturally, players are excited, if tentative, at the moment. Turns out, however, that this might not be Magic’s only voyage into the genre in the near future. Based on some errant product listings online, a full-on Star Trek Universes Beyond set could be in the works.

While this is all very exciting, admittedly, we don’t entirely trust the source of this leak ourselves. That said, there is a lot of compelling evidence to support the existence of such a set. Star Trek is an IP with a fanbase and certainly the material to fuel an entire MTG expansion. If today’s rumors turn out to be true, we could be looking at a set with similar potential to Lord of the Rings and Final Fantasy.

A Star Trek Universes Beyond Set Incoming?!

The rumors surrounding a Star Trek Universes Beyond set began with Saga Concepts. This is a New Jersey-based games store with a significant online presence. They posted listings for a number of Magic: The Gathering x Star Trek products just yesterday, as you can see above. While the listings didn’t go into much detail, and have since been deleted, they do suggest that the set will feature Prerelease packs and full booster boxes. This means we’re looking at a full set, not just a Secret Lair drop.

While this is far from confirmed, players have already cottoned on to the idea. In the r/MTGRumors thread discussing the listings, there’s a lot of excitement brewing. Virtual-Quote6309 said “If this is real I’m all fucking in.” In a similar vein, SkyrakerBeyond added “Ah shit, they’re doing an entire set. There goes all my money.”

Clearly, there’s an appetite for a Star Trek set out there. With Edge of Eternities laying the groundwork this year, a lot more general players may be won over to the idea of sci-fi Magic soon. With this in mind, it’s really not an outrageous product for Wizards to pursue. It’s tempting to see rumors like this and get carried away. That said, it’s important to look at all the evidence first.

Some Compelling Evidence

Star Trek Universes Beyond Evidence

There are actually a lot of good points in favor of the Star Trek Universes Beyond set being real. First of all, there was a leak last year of what appeared to be a Star Trek Secret Lair card. While the legitimacy of this leak remains unconfirmed, it’s certainly promising. We’ve had similar leaks that ended up making it as real products before, and it could happen again.

While players assumed this was a Secret Lair card, it could instead be a Showcase style for use in the full Star Trek set. Alternatively, it could be that there are Secret Lair drops planned alongside the set, like we saw with Final Fantasy. In either case, the existence of this leak is a strong piece of evidence that grants today’s leak more weight.

The other major factor at play here is Edge of Eternities. This is a set that’s introducing a lot of new mechanics to Magic, most of them specifically tied to sci-fi. While Mark Rosewater has confirmed that Station could be used elsewhere, it’s hard to imagine Spacecraft, Warp, or Lander tokens showing up in regular Magic sets.

Star Trek would be a prime opportunity to get more mileage out of these ideas. It’s not a guarantee, of course, as plenty of sets have one-and-done gameplay features. We’re probably not seeing Max Speed again anytime soon, for example. It is another solid argument in favor of today’s leaks being legit, mind you.

An Unreliable Source

On the other hand, there are major issues with the leak itself that point to the whole thing being a hoax. Mainly, the fact that it comes via Saga Concepts. This is a website that has posted “early product listings” before, which have turned out to be nothing. One, for example, featured a ‘Return to Tarkir Race Bundle,’ presumably speculating that Tarkir would be one of the planes featured in Aetherdrift.

Saga Concepts also currently has a page up for ‘Return to Lorwyn,’ the set we now know will be called Lorwyn Eclipsed. This page features a description of the set that claims it’ll feature a wrestling theme, with cards like Foldsteel Folding Chair. Not only is this obviously nonsense given the existing theming of Lorwyn/Shadowmoor, it’s also very likely AI-generated.

The set codename for Lorwyn Eclipsed was Wrestling, so Saga Concepts likely threw that and Lorwyn in a prompt and posted the results. With this in mind, it’s hard to take listings from this website at face value. Even when they’re for a product as feasible as a Star Trek Universes Beyond set, a generous pinch of salt must be applied.

On top of this, the logo used for the set in the listings is all wrong. Wizards doesn’t include ‘Universes Beyond’ in set logos, never mind stylize it. The weird yellow font used is also one that hasn’t been used in the past by Star Trek itself, so it’s highly suspicious. While it’s exciting to speculate, we’re not holding our breath on this leak being legit for now.
