Happy April Fool’s Day! Today is a day of pranks gags, and sometimes it can be difficult to tell what’s real and what isn’t. When it comes to MTG, you can’t always trust what you read, as it may turn out to be fake.
However, a new Secret Lair has appeared on the Secret Lair website, and it’s actually available for purchase. Fans of the Marvel franchise should be very excited, as should Un-set enthusiasts. This Secret Lair features a new Hero card with a strange text box-swapping ability. The value of this Secret Lair is very enticing, so let’s dive right in and see what’s in store.
Deadpool, Trading Card
Kicking things off, we have the Mutant Mercenary Hero known as Deadpool, Trading Card. This design is absolutely wild, and should bring some hilarity to your Commander games.
The goal with this card is pretty simple. As Deadpool enters, you want to exchange Deadpool’s text box with an opposing creature with a slew of strong abilities. In an EDH setting, you’re bound to find something juicy to take advantage of.
Unlike a traditional Clone effect, though, your opponent’s creature no longer has its abilities. Instead, it forces the opponent to lose life until they sacrifice it themselves. This essentially takes opposing Commanders hostage, as well. They’ll need to pay mana and give opponents cards to get rid of it.
Deadpool is really sweet. The fact that the effect happens as Deadpool enters and doesn’t create a trigger means that even if your opponent has a removal spell at the ready for Deadpool, their big threat still gets weakened significantly. This could even be a cEDH-playable card.
Deadly Rollick
Next, we have a card that nearly singlehandedly pays for the Marvel’s Deadpool Secret Lair. Deadly Rollick is part of a powerful cycle of cards that can be cast for free as long as you control a Commander.
In the case of Deadly Rollick, the effect you get is a free removal spell. It even exiles, so it deals with indestructible threats. The reality is, almost every black Commander deck will want this card. The only inhibiting factor is price.
Deadly Rollick was printed in Commander 2020 as well as Commander Masters. Despite being reprinted, this rare is still worth roughly $28 in its cheapest, traditional form according to TCGplayer market price. Premium variants easily begin to surpass $40, which suggests that there is a very strong chance that this Deadly Rollick will be more expensive than the entire Lair.
Saw in Half
Saw in Half is another amusing design that first debuted in Unfinity. However, this card eventually got a reprint in Bloomburrow Commander as a fitting token producer.
Despite being a removal spell, you typically want to target one of your own creatures to get two copies of it. Even if the copies are each smaller, you get double the enters-the-battlefield triggers. As such, destroying a creature like Gray Merchant of Asphodel and getting two token copies can be devastating for your opponents.
Any token synergies, such as playing Saw in Half alongside Doubling Season, make Saw in Half an excellent value engine. This is part of the reason Saw in Half was a perfect inclusion in the Bloomburrow Squirrel Away Commander deck featuring Hazel of the Rootbloom at the helm. Saw in Half holds a price tag of nearly $6. making it a solid card to reprint.
Vandalblast
The final two cards in the Marvel’s Deadpool Secret Lair are staples of most red Commander decks. The first is Vandalblast, which is an excellent tool to have in a format dominated by mana rocks. Vandalblast is an incredible artifact destruction spell that conveniently leaves all of your artifacts intact. If your opponent is playing an Urza, Lord High Artificer deck, Vandalblast will mess them up pretty good.
This potent sorcery has been reprinted countless times. It’s also been featured mostly at uncommon, so it’s no surprise the card isn’t worth too much. Nonetheless, it does maintain a $3 price tag, as it’s always in high demand. The artwork and flavor text make this version of Vandalblast very appealing.
Blasphemous Act
Finally, we have Blasphemous Act. Blasphemous Act is the premier red board wipe in EDH. 13 damage is enough to kill almost anything. As players continue to develop their boards, chances are, you’ll get to cast Blasphemous Act for only one mana.
Any deck with an indestructible Commander or a Planeswalker in the Command Zone is built to maximize Blasphemous Act even further. Efficiency is king, and this card delivers.
Once again, though, the card’s high demand isn’t enough to keep its price tag high due to countless reprints. Even as a rare, Blasphemous Act only checks in at about $2 in cheapest form.
Reprint Value
The good news, though, is that the combination of cards in this Secret Lair make it worthwhile. This Secret Lair is available in non-foil for $39.99 and foil for $49.99. In non-foil form, before factoring in the new Deadpool card, these cards have a total reprint value of $39.
In this sense, this Secret Lair is a bargain. These Secret Lair variants are likely to be worth a bit more across the board. Plus, the new Deadpool, Trading Card is bound to hold some value, given that the design is currently not available anywhere else.
This Secret Lair is set to ship out April 3 according to the Secret Lair website. Don’t miss your chance to add these sweet cards to your collection.
