Today is a very exciting day for Magic: The Gathering players. In just a few hours, the preview panel at MagicCon: Atlanta will reveal what Wizards has in store for the game for 2026. We’ll see new sets, new products, and, most importantly, new cards. Before the festivities get underway, however, we’ve got a few appetizers to tide us over. Late last night, the Bonus Card for the MTG x Play-Doh Secret Lair drop was revealed.
While this drop isn’t fully available to the public yet, Black Lotus attendees in Atlanta have been able to pick it up early. The same goes for the Spider Man drops, which have had a Bonus Card of their own revealed, too. On top of this, the official Secret Lair X account has just teased a wacky new collaboration. Looks like the hype train is pulling out of the station early today, folks.
The Play-Doh Scute Swarm Bonus Card
- Mana Value: 2G
- Type: Creature – Insect
- Rarity: Rare
- Card Text: Landfall — Whenever a land you control enters, create a 1/1 green Insect creature token. If you control six or more lands, create a token that’s a copy of this creature instead.
- Stats: 1/1
The Bonus Card for the MTG x Play-Doh Secret Lair drop appears to be Scute Swarm. This is fully in-keeping with the rest of the drop, which is all about cards that create tokens, representing the creative power of Play-Doh. Scute Swarm is probably the most extreme example out of all of them, easily creating an impractical number of Insects with just a little Landfall trickery.
If you play Commander at all, chances are you’ve run into this lil’ critter more than once. It’s an absolute staple in Landfall, Token, and Insect Typal decks. Heck, there’s a good argument for running it in any given green list with Fetchlands and ramp spells like Farseek. This widespread usability, combined with the fact that the card’s triggers can be cumbersome to track, has led Wizards to label the card a “mistake” design-wise. Like Cathars’ Crusade, this is a card you really need to stay on top of.
Perhaps because of these playability issues, Scute Swarm is a fairly reasonably-priced card despite its high power. You can get copies for around $3.80 right now, which is very solid for a card you can run in so many places. The fact that the card has been reprinted in four different Commander precons certainly helps matters, too.
We could well see a significant price multiplier on this Play-Doh version, but at this pre-launch stage it’s hard to tell what the community consensus is on the style. In any case, it’s a fitting Bonus Card that a lot of players will actually be able to play, and it adds to the already solid value of the drop nicely.
The Spider Man Fatal Push
- Mana Value: B
- Type: Instant
- Rarity: Rare
- Card Text: Destroy target creature if it has mana value 2 or less.
Revolt — Destroy that creature if it has mana value 4 or less instead if a permanent left the battlefield under your control this turn.
Scute Swarm wasn’t the only new Secret Lair Bonus Card revealed today. We also got to see Fatal Push, which appears to be the Bonus Card for the Venom Unleashed drop. Since the card has no connection to Venom at all, it could well be the Bonus Card for the other drops, too. For now though we don’t know for sure.
As Bonus Cards go, this one if a bit of a slam-dunk. In terms of flavor, depicting the iconic death of Gwen Stacy on Fatal Push is a move as obvious as it is brilliant. Fans have been hoping for this exact card for months, so it’s great to see Wizards deliver. In terms of gameplay, you can’t go wrong with Fatal Push as a card. It’s a true multi-format staple, seeing play in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, and even Vintage.
There’s a solid argument that it’s the best black removal spell of all time, in fact. Thanks to plentiful reprints the price is fairly low, with copies available for around $0.70. Past Secret Lair versions, like the Yargle Day one, command price tags up around $17, however, so this one could be worth considerably more.
As with the rest of the cards in the Venom Unleashed drop, Fatal Push is also available in a black-and-white “Inked” version. Interestingly, the images above seem to show this version in the regular drop, and the regular version in the Inked drop. If this is how they’re being distributed, some players could well end up annoyed. As Rodrigo Calderon said on X: “Why would they be so stupid to mix the bonus cards?!?!? IF I ONLY BOUGHT THE COLORED SECRET LAIR IS BECAUSE I DIDNT F*CKING LIKED THE INK ONE.”
More Toy Crossovers To Come?
We may be out of Bonus Cards to talk about, but we’re not quite done with Secret Lair news for today just yet. In a post on X earlier today, Wizards seems to be teasing a Secret Lair collaboration with the Furby toy line.
While the post calls this new drop “weird and ridiculous,” it’s hard to view it as such nowadays. Coming hot on the heels of the Play-Doh crossover, this honestly isn’t surprising at all. The Furby brand is owned by Hasbro, which makes it an equally easy partnership to arrange. Furby is also a toy range that many already associate with collectability, which makes it an ideal fit both for Magic: The Gathering and Secret Lair.
While Furby, like Play-Doh, largely lacks recognizable characters, some of the classic designs are fairly iconic. We could see some of these, like the $100,000 Bejeweled Furby, show up as cards in the drop. We could also see a heavy focus on the limited edition aspect of Secret Lair to tie in further. This is all speculation for now, of course.
In any case, the post seems to imply that we’ll find out more details about the crossover at MagicCon: Atlanta this weekend. This will likely be part of the preview panel later today, but it could get its own smaller announcement elsewhere instead. For those nostalgic for the ’90s good times that Furby provided, this is one to keep your eyes peeled for.
