2025 has certainly been the year of Universes Beyond. With partnerships to all kinds of IPs, including Final Fantasy, Spider Man, and SpongeBob, Universes Beyond is now commonplace. What would have once seemed absurd a few years ago is just another regular day for MTG nowadays. That said, having MTG suddenly appear during a Nintendo Direct is something that even the most speculative players may have never expected.
Nintendo has just revealed that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will be coming to the Switch 2 early next year. As if this wasn’t exciting enough, there’s a weird collaboration with MTG going on to sweeten the deal for Nintendo fans.
Nintendo Final Fantasy Booster Promo
Today, Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade would be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S consoles, and PC. This was announced alongside the game’s release date on these platforms: January 22nd, 2026. Considering Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade first launched on PS5 way back in 2021, it’s safe to say this wider release has been a long time coming.
On top of just announcing the game’s debut on new platforms, Square Enix also revealed a unique preorder bonus. Those who preorder physical copies of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for the Nintendo Switch 2 will get an MTG Final Fantasy Play Booster. Thankfully, digital Final Fantasy fans aren’t entirely missing out, as they’ll get a digital copy of the original Final Fantasy VII when preordering.
While it’s nice not to have a chunk of a game carved out as a pre-order bonus, these incentives aren’t amazing. In terms of value, a Final Fantasy Play Booster is worth around $10, while the original Final Fantasy VII sells for $12 on Steam. Technically, both of these are better than nothing, but it’s always better to avoid the sting of a preordered game being worse than expected.
Nevertheless, while the value on offer isn’t incredible, this promotion could be useful. Theoretically, it’s a compelling way to attract Final Fantasy fans who didn’t know about the MTG set toward the game. That said, by only targeting Final Fantasy fans who are Nintendo Switch 2 owners who don’t mind preordering games, this promotion is for a niche audience.
Within this niche, there’s a good chance that many Final Fantasy fans will already know about the MTG crossover. Still, for these players who were going to buy Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade anyway, getting a free pack is always nice.
A Future Partnership?
As cool as it is to see Magic: The Gathering appear during a Nintendo Direct, this doesn’t really suggest a partnership between Nintendo and Hasbro. This promotion comes from Square Enix as a way to sweeten the deal for preorders for the game’s release. While there’s a good chance that Wizards was involved in supplying packs, it’s unlikely they’re working directly with Nintendo.
That said, while Square Enix was in charge of this promotion, the possibility of Wizards working with Nintendo is definitely exciting. At the very least, this preorder incentive should help put Magic more on Nintendo’s radar, if it’s not there already. Hypothetically, this could lead to a Nintendo Universes Beyond set, or Secret Lair, in the future.
Ultimately, whether or not Nintendo is actually working with Wizards is up in the air at the moment, but it might not be long until we find out. With much of the 2026 MTG release calendar being revealed next week, there’s a non-zero chance a Nintendo-based set could be announced soon. That said, I wouldn’t exactly be optimistic about this happening, even if it is a possibility.
