Marvel's Wolverine Helps Cause 199% Price Spike to Synergistic Legend

In many cases, when an older card sees a large spike in price seemingly out of nowhere, it’s important to look at recent spoilers that the card may have elite synergy with. For instance, we recently covered a major increase in price to Tempt with Bunnies. Thanks to Hare Apparent appearing in MTG Foundations, the Rabbit creature type gained some extra appeal.

Now, Neyith of the Dire Hunt is surging in price as well. This time around, Neyith combos quite nicely with one of the new Marvel Superheroes. This has likely contributed to the spike in a big way. Let’s take a closer look at the spike and what makes Neyith so strong.

Neyith of the Dire Hunt Price Spike

Neyith of the Dire Hunt
  • Mana Value: 2GG
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Stats: 3/3
  • MTG Sets: Jumpstart
  • Card Text: Whenever one or more creatures you control fight or become blocked, draw a card. At the beginning of combat on your turn, you may pay 2(R/G). If you do, double target creature’s power until end of turn. That creature must be blocked this combat if able. (R/G can be paid with either R of G).

Neyith is a neat card from Jumpstart that serves as a solid Commander option. The goal is to pair Neyith with fight spells and creatures that can dominate combat. From there, Neyith can force opposing creatures to block your big threat, all while generating card advantage in the process.

Roughly one month ago on October 7, Neyith sat at $3.36 according to TCGPlayer market price history. Three weeks later, the price rose slightly to $4.34, but this small increase is rather insignificant. However, since then, the card has been consistently climbing in price, with near mint copies sitting currently at $10.03.

This means Neyith has jumped in price by about 199%, and this number could continue to rise. So, what’s the reason behind the spike?

Neyith and Wolverine Unite

Wolverine, Best There Is
  • Mana Value: 1RG
  • Rarity: Mythic Rare
  • Stats: 2/2
  • MTG Sets: Marvel Secret Lair
  • Card Text: Unrivaled Lethality– Double all damage Wolverine would deal. At the beginning of each end step, if Wolverine dealt damage to another creature this turn, put a +1/+1 counter on him. 1G: Regenerate Wolverine. (The next time he would be destroyed this turn, instead tap him, remove him from combat, and heal all damage on him.)

Likely the biggest reason Neyith has spiked is due to its strong synergy with Wolverine. The Marvel Secret Lair products just went live this past Monday, so there’s a lot of hype surrounding the new potent legends.

Wolverine is a Commander that rewards you for dealing lots of damage at once, especially to creatures. If the opponent blocks Wolverine, you can simply Regenerate him, and at your end step, Wolverine will grow.

Well, Neyith gives you the option to double Wolverine’s power and force an opponent to block it. Because Wolverine naturally deals double damage, almost any creature that blocks Wolverine will perish.

Of course, if the opponent has no blockers, then doubling Wolverine’s power with Neyith and dealing double damage to the opponent will cause them to lose a ton of life. Commander damage is a real threat with Wolverine, and Neyith makes Wolverine a much scarier threat.

We’ve already seen cards that combine nicely with Captain America spike in price, so Neyith’s price jump isn’t too surprising. Make sure to be on the lookout for any other major shifts as more players get their hands on these Marvel legends.
