Even though Modern Horizons 3 was, as its name suggests, a Modern-focused set, it still heavily catered to the Commander audience. Four Commander Precon decks were still provided to players who wanted them – though they were a bit more expensive than usual.

Even though there was some catering to Commander players in a Modern set, and that indeed received its share of controversy, the Commander decks did try to focus on Modern themes – immortalizing them in the Commander format. Tarmogoyf isn’t very good in Modern right now, but its iconic status is something that all Magic players are familiar with. Once worth $200 each, this was the best and most iconic creature in the Modern format for quite some time.

Paying homage to the Modern Jund Midrange decks of old, the Graveyard Overdrive Commander deck further immortalized that beloved archetype. Featuring the iconic ‘Jund em’ out’ slogan at the top of the product packaging, this nod makes the intent of the deck clear.

As a Lhurgoyf-themed graveyard deck, Graveyard Overdrive introduced a few new Tarmogoyf-esque friends to eternal formats. Appearing everywhere, from Legacy to Vintage Cube, these Goyfs are seriously powerful. Pyrogoyf, one of these new Goyfs, is seeing a price increase this week.

Pyrogoyf

  • Mana Value: 3R
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Stats: */*+1
  • MTG Sets: Modern Horizons 3 Commander
  • Card Text: Pyrogoyf’s power is equal to the number of card types among cards in all graveyards and its toughness is equal to that number plus 1. Whenever Pyrogoyf or another Lhurgoyf enters the battlefield under your control, that creature deals damage equal to its power to any target.

Pyrogoyf is a mix of old abilities on a creature. Boasting the Lhurgoyf type that made Tarmogoyf so iconic, Pyrogoyf offers an additional perk for two more mana. This creature can deal damage to any target equal to the power of any Lhurgoyf entering the battlefield. Pyrogoyf does trigger on itself, which is rather noteworthy, but running just a few Lhyrgoyf in addition to this one makes Pyrogoyf an absolute beating.

This card is perhaps most famous for its inclusion in the Vintage Cube, but Pyrogoyf also sees play in Dual Commander and some fringe play in Legacy. Aside from working in Lhurgoyf decks, Pyrogoyf also works well alongside flicker effects that can cause Pyrogoyf’s ETB trigger to go off multiple times.

Pyrogoyf has risen from about 50 cents at the beginning of August to $3 this week. There are some serious discrepancies between prices for Pyrogoyf right now, which makes its actual worth a bit tough to determine. The card sold for as little as 33 cents, and as much as $9.75 in the last two days, but the trend seems to hold it around $2-4. Pyrogoyf is seeing some financial attention regardless thanks to the recent highs that Pyrogoyf is selling for. The card is quite capable, so a $2-4 price tag on the card, barring the popularity of Lhurgoyfs, isn’t unreasonable. Notably, Pyrogoyf plays exceptionally well with the new Formless Genesis card, which is going to see a ton of Commander play.
