New MTG Promos Reprint Two of the Best One-Drops Ever Made

Share

Lorwyn Eclipsed spoiler season is finally on the horizon, and there’s a lot to look forward to. The set looks like a blast so far, thanks to its wealth of nostalgic themes. Even the reprints among the Special Guests are fantastic this time around.

To make the set feel even more special, Wizards just revealed the promos for the upcoming Pro Tour and Store Championships. In a nice, surprising turn of events, these are some of the best MTG promos that we’ve ever seen. Every card, including the participation promo, is a Modern all-star. There’s quite a strong chance that these cards will end up being worth a fortune.

Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed Promo

For fans of the Modern Horizons 3 transforming Planeswalkers, you may be excited to hear that Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student is the Pro Tour promo for Lorwyn Eclipsed. Over the last couple of years, Tamiyo has emerged as a multi-format monster. It sees consistent play in Dimir Midrange shells in Modern, is an unbelievable tool for tempo archetypes in Legacy, and even makes its presence felt in Timeless on MTG Arena.

Unsurprisingly, the card’s massive appeal as a super staple has helped it maintain a high price tag of $25 in its cheapest form. For anyone who wants to collect this variant, however, the card’s price tag may become seriously outrageous.

This is because only players who participate in Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed will receive a copy, making them incredibly scarce. While it may not quite rival the price of the Cloud, Midgar Mercenary Pro Tour promo, Tamiyo has a good chance of being worth a hefty amount.

On top of that, the 32 best finishers at Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed will receive foil versions that are bound to be worth thousands due to their rarity. Unlike past Pro Tour promos, the card choice and artwork are both impressive this time around, and this trend continues down to the Store Championship promos.

Store Championship Participation Promo

For anyone who plays in a Store Championship event between February 6th and February 22nd, you’ll receive a beautiful Goblin Bombardment promo for your efforts. Despite being worth just $3, this is a massive upgrade over the usual Store Championship participation promo.

Furthermore, the card has made its mark in Modern Boros Energy, one of the strongest and most consistent decks in the format. It excels in the mirror, helping you take down opposing copies of Ocelot Pride. Of course, it also synergizes with your own Cat tokens from Ocelot Pride, and helps you flip Ajani, Nacatl Pariah on command. Add on the card’s impact in go-wide sacrifice decks in Commander, and you’ve got an elite participation promo choice.

Store Championship Top 8 Promo

For Boros Energy enjoyers, the fun doesn’t stop there, since the top eight promo is yet another staple. Anyone fortunate enough to make it to the elimination rounds will earn themselves a full-art copy of Guide of Souls.

The value Guide of Souls provides for Energy shells cannot be overstated. The life gain clause guarantees that Ocelot Pride’s abilities can trigger without you ever having to enter combat. Meanwhile, stockpiling Energy helps you start attacking in the air for boatloads of damage.

Guide of Souls hold a reprint value of roughly $4, which while not incredible, is still better than many top eight promos in the past. Given just how much Constructed play this card sees, it wouldn’t be shocking if this version ends up being worth significantly more money.

Store Championship Winner’s Promo

This round of Store Championship promos culminates with the winner’s promo, which is none other than Ocelot Pride. This card checks every box you could realistically hope for out of a Store Championship promo. Its artwork is absolutely adorable, the card sees ample play, and its cheapest printing is still worth a whopping $37. This is a higher reprint value than any other Store Championship promo released up to this point. Thanks to its Commander applications, Ocelot Pride isn’t just a competitive staple. Any deck that uses tokens will want this card in its arsenal.

Reaching the heights of Urza’s Saga as a textless winner’s promo seemed nearly impossible, and yet Ocelot Pride delivers on every metric. For reference, foil Urza’s Saga promos are still selling for $370, so expect this Ocelot Pride variant to be super expensive as well.

The Lorwyn Eclipsed Store Championship will be held between February 6th and 22nd. If you want a chance to win some of the best promos we’ve ever seen, be sure to ask your local game store when they will be hosting their Store Championships.

A Few More Cards to Look For

To round things up, there are a few more Lorwyn Eclipsed promos to watch out for. These aren’t as exciting as the Pro Tour or Store Championship reprints, but they could still be valuable to some collectors.

Nowhere to Run and Farhaven Elf will both be receiving their first Retro Border reprints. While these cards don’t have significant secondary market value, they both see their fair share of play. Nowhere to Run commonly appears in Standard bounce strategies, and Farhaven Elf appears in all kinds of different Commander ramp decks. With Lorwyn Eclipsed having a heavy Elf theme, Farhaven Elf will likely become a popular Commander commodity.

Fortunately, grabbing these promos should be pretty straightforward. Nowhere to Run will be offered to winners of Standard Showdown events between January 23rd and February 26th. Farhaven Elf, on the other hand, will be available for Two-Headed Giant Commander Night participants during the same timeframe.
