New MTG Partnership Reveals Upcoming Comic Book Series

Share

Over recent years, the identity of Magic: The Gathering has been somewhat strained. Following the introduction, and rise, of Universes Beyond, MTG is more creatively and visually diverse than ever before. While this has helped the game’s player base and profits massively, Magic fans haven’t been too happy about it.

Thankfully, fans of MTG’s core IP are finally getting some long-overdue love. This is thanks to a newly announced partnership between Hasbro and Dark Horse Comics. While details about this partnership are scarce at the moment, this is a perfect opportunity to tell some fantastic stories from MTG’s vast multiverse.

Hasbro X Dark Horse Comics

As you’d expect from their name, Dark Horse is partnering with Hasbro to release a series of comic books and graphic novels based on the company’s IP. Specifically, Dark Horse will be creating original stories inspired by the Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons IPs.

The project is scheduled to touch down beginning in Summer 2025 and could continue into 2026. From the sounds of things, there’s still a lot to iron out in terms of exactly how this is going to break down. That said, players excited to read further into the world of Magic will need to wait about a year’s time.

Notably, this is not the first time Dark Horse Comics has released Magic-related material. The constant partnerships between Magic and Dark Horse Comics span across the last four decades.

Community Opinion

Many MTG players are excited at the prospect of having another opportunity to delve into the game’s original IP. While we do get a story for each MTG set that gets released nowadays, they are rather short and could benefit from some deeper detail.

We actually had another MTG comic series not too long ago, but this series wasn’t technically canon. Named the Boom! series, while the stories from this comic lineup were original, they were not true to the continual story that expands upon each core MTG set release.

This has players asking whether the comic book series released by Dark Horse Comics will be canon. At this point, they could affect the main storyline, could affect the Boom! storyline, or could even be entirely its own thing:

“An interesting thing to see, but the Boom! Studio comics were pretty good (until the last five which were just… Fine, though a bit fanfic-y feeling if that makes sense), and if they’re of that same quality or at least close I’ll probably like them. Wonder what they’ll actually do, story-wise, because it’s sounding like they’ll also just be original stories (though probably with existing characters like the Boom ones).”

For now, players suspect that the story will either be canon to the main universe or to the Boom! one, with very few speculating that this will be an entirely different thing.

That’s it for Now!

Sadly, not a lot of details are known about this collaboration past the tentative release date. From the sounds of things, the length of this partnership may depend on how successful the initial storyline is for both the Magic: the Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons comics.

So, if you’re really excited about the prospect of some more MTG lore to explore, be sure to let people know. The better this product does, the more of it we may see.
