There’s a huge market for Magic: The Gathering in Japan, so it’s not surprising to see unique collaborations with Wizards of the Coast when it comes to promoting their popular trading card game. Since 2018, an independent publisher has been putting out new manga chapters themed around Magic, and it’s called insei wo Hakai Suru. Sorera wa Saisei Dekinai (Destroy All Humankind. They Can’t Be Regenerated).

Fans of the ongoing manga series have also received a new foil Japanese promo card that comes with the latest volume. Volume 8 of Destroy All Humankind. They Can’t Be Regenerated is scheduled to release on August 26, and the official Japanese MTG Twitter account has shared our first look at the new promo card, Bone Shredder.

New Japanese MTG promo card revealed!

For those who are not familiar, the Destroy All Humankind  manga series by Yokota Takuma and Ise Katsura features  old school Magic cards from the 90’s. The “youth graffiti” MTG-themed manga centers on two Magic: The Gathering players in the 1990s. The manga offiicially launched in the January issue of Monthly Shōnen Ace magazine on November 26, 2018. Ise is credited with the original work, and Wizards of the Coast, the Hasbro publisher of Magic, is credited with cooperation.

Here’s a closer look at the Japanese foil promo version of Bone Shredder:

Originally printed in Urza’s Legacy in 1999, Bone Shredder is an uncommon black 1/1 Flying creature with Flying and Echo (a terrible ability that requires you to pay its mana cost in the next upkeep after you play it), and it has the ability that reads, “When Bone Shredder enters the battlefield, destroy target nonartifact, nonblack creature.”

The manga has been focused on featuring older Magic cards that were released in the 90s, so it’s not surprising to see a promo card from Urza’s Legacy included in this beloved manga series. This is not the first the manga series offered a new MTG promo card. In 2019, Epicstream.com reported about the promo Duress that came with the third volume of the manga series.
