New Hobbit Secret Lairs Show Off 19-Year-Old Black Redirection Spell

At MagicCon: Amsterdam, Wizards showcased a ton of upcoming products in their Secret Lair Reveal-a-thon. Unsurprisingly, this includes a Hobbit-themed collection known as the Marvelous Mathoms Superdrop. While only the Second Breakfast and Beyond drop was showcased in its entirety, we also got a glimpse at some one-offs from other drops. Now, it appears a few more cards have been revealed as well.

Joining the previously highlighted Food tokens and Arcane Heist cards, we have three other reprints to share that each look drop-dead gorgeous. The most expensive of the bunch, Imp’s Mischief, is also the most unique.

Originally printed back in Planar Chaos, this instant allows you to redirect your opponent’s removal spells to their own creatures. In a sense, this functions as a black counterspell in Commander, redirecting a piece of removal for the low cost of five life. Thanks to its broad appeal, the card’s demand stays relatively high, which has contributed to it maintaining a near $7 reprint value.

Despite being a great Commander inclusion, Imp’s Mischief’s popularity still pales in comparison to that of Mirkwood Bats. Appearing in 415,000 Commander decks according to EDHREC, this token payoff’s triggers add up quickly. The only thing holding this card back as a reprint choice is its low $1.20 price tag, but, as this card’s first premium printing, this could go for a lot more.

By contrast, Lightning Greaves has seen a boatload of Secret Lair printings already, but maintains a respectable price tag. After all, Haste and Shroud for the low equip cost of zero mana is an incredible asset for any deck. With a whopping 2,330,000 decks to its name according to EDHREC, it’s no wonder the uncommon still sits near $4.

While these goodies are certainly intriguing, there are still plenty more inclusions that have yet to be revealed. This Superdrop is set to go live on August 17th at 9 AM PT, so make sure to keep the date in mind and watch out for any other reveals in the near future.
