Everyone loves a good new Dragon. One of the most popular typal archetypes in Commander, Dragons are commonly received with massive fanfare.
Today, Bloomburrow introduces yet another interesting Dragon for players to consider. Bird Dragon is certainly a bizarre creature combination, but this Dragon will be rewarding for any players who care about their creatures having four or more power. Oddly, for a Mythic, this card seems rather underwhelming outside of Draft and Commander.
Dragonhawk, Fate’s Tempest
Dragonhawk, Fate’s Tempest is a new Legendary Dragon that offers a series of Impulse draws depending on how big your board is. The good news is that Dragonhawk always counts itself, so you’re guaranteed to get at least one Impulse draw. Sadly, you don’t get a lot of time to play these cards. Unlike Wrenn’s Resolve and Reckless Impulse, Dragonhawk only plays cards until your next end step.
Considering you don’t have a ton of time to play your cards, exiling multiple cards from Dragonhawk’s ability, and playing them, can be tough. Fortunately, cards you don’t play convert directly into damage to your opponents, ensuring that cards exiled by Dragonhawk always have a purpose.
Honestly, for a Mythic Rare, Dragonhawk, Fate’s Tempest is rather underwhelming. Yes, the card is incredibly powerful in Limited, but this is rather unimpressive outside of Commander. The card simply does not do enough on impact. If it had Haste, Dragonhawk would be a lot more interesting in the Standard format. In Commander, Dragonhawk can still Impulse draw a ton of cards relatively easily, but the card is rather disappointing otherwise.

Something a Bit Better
Season of the Burrow is the white card of a particular Mythic Bloomburrow cycle involving what we like to call paw print points. These aren’t a real currency like Energy Counters- just a way to assign different values to each mode that the Season cycle offers. All of these cards are modal sorceries offering modes with different costs – something we haven’t seen before this. Season of the Burrow has a rather interesting combination of abilities, but it does feel a bit weaker than the other cards in this cycle… unless you can make use of the final mode effectively.
Reviving an Indestructible three drop is no joke. This can singlehandedly swing the game in Limited formats, and could make your centerpiece very difficult for the opponent. Sadly, if this card ends up seeing a ton of play, Season of the Burrow ends up being an out to itself. This will prevent the card from ever being broken, but I could see this taking a tournament by surprise. If you cannot make use of the last mode, and making a bunch of tokens isn’t good enough, this card is likely a pass as well.
