Another Secret Lair sale, another collection of cards gone before the majority of MTG fans even have a chance to try and purchase it. There are generally some telltale signs as to which bundle is most likely to sell out in a Secret Lair sale, and this one is no different.
Foil Karlach’s Rage Secret Lair is Sold Out
For anyone who wanted to take part in this particularly Thrilling Possibility, that chance is now gone. the foil variant of the Karlach’s Rage Secret Lair has sold out in the US. Elsewhere in the world, both the nonfoil and foil variants have sold out in the UK. Considering the amount of hype that this Secret Lair received in its preview season, this isn’t all that shocking.
Outside of hype alone, the foil variant of this particular Secret Lair offered a lot of potential value. Dolmen Gate, in particular, was by far the best reprint found in the Karlach’s Rage Secret Lair. While its non-foil variant sells for $17, the foil variant goes for $92. While this is rather enticing, foil Secret Lair prices rarely match the all-time peak of old foils.
This immense price is thanks to the only foil variant of the card being from Lorwyn. Not only does this set follow the old foiling chances, but Lorwyn was infamously short-printed, limiting the supply of this card even more. Up until now, this second foil printing of Dolmen’s Gate may have actually given players a more affordable alternative to buying the card as a single. Sadly, now that this Secret Lair sold out in around one hour.
Thanks to this insanely quick sale, copies of the foil Karlach’s Rage cards are sure to be in demand. With this in mind, there’s a non-zero chance the Secret Lair prices could even match the originals for a change! Whether or not this will happen, however, remains to be seen.
Notably, the non-foil variant of Karlach’s Rage is still available in the North American region. There’s no telling how long this will last, however.

Astarion’s Thirst has Completely Sold Out
While the foil Karlach’s Rage was the first Secret Lair to sell out, the Astarion’s Thirst Secret Lair was the first one to sell out in its entirety. Both the nonfoil and foil variations of this Secret Lair are no longer available in the US.
While many, us included, expected Karlach’s Rage to sell out, Astarion’s Thirst may come as more of a surprise. In terms of reprint value, this Secret Lair is rather disappointing, however, the art is absolutely fantastic. To sweeten the deal even more, this Secret Lair contained everything you need for an infinite combo, which was a welcome treat.
Despite the mediocre secondary market value, this sellout means that the singles from Astarion’s Thirst are likely to go for quite the premium. This is proven by past precedent for Secret Lairs that sold out early. Just look back at the Hatsune Miku Lairs from earlier this year if you need evidence of that.
Continued Issues
Following the surprisingly generous availability of the Festival in a Box, it appeared the issue with popular Secret Lairs selling out was ending. Sadly, Karlach’s Rage has proven that quick sellouts will continue. This isn’t quite as bad as the Monty Python Crossover Secret Lairs, which had all of its variants sell out in record time, but it is a disappointing return to form that many were hoping not to see.
Before the Monty Python fiasco, Hatsune Miku MTG Secret Lairs were flying off the shelves, too. Only available for a few hours, these Secret Lairs were also very difficult to purchase from the original source. Of course, scalpers will always relist these products for those who were too late, but you’ll be paying more than you may want to.
Ultimately, if any Secret Lair were to sell out for the D&D 50th Anniversary Secret Lair Superdrop, this is the one that appeared to be on its way out. The good news is that anyone who does want this Secret Lair can still purchase the nonfoil variant as of the writing of this article. Who knows how long that will last?
