MTG X Spongebob Squarepants Secret Lair Reveals 7 Legendary Characters

Share

Every year, for better or for worse, more and more Universes Beyond products get announced. We’re barely into 2025, and we’ve already gotten a dose of MTG Spider-Man and MTG Final Fantasy spoilers.

Before we can even prepare for the release of these sets, though, it appears we have another crossover to share. This time, the fan-favorite cartoon Spongebob Squarepants is joining in on the fun in a brand-new Secret Lair collection!

Seven interesting legendary creatures from throughout Magic the Gathering’s past are getting reskinned as iconic Spongebob characters in the Legends of Bikini Bottom Secret Lair. So, if you’ve wanted to play with Patrick Star or Squidward Tentacles in your Command Zone, now’s your chance.

Spongebob Squarepants

To kick things off, we have a version of Jodah, the Unifier reimagined as Spongebob Squarepants. Jodah is a neat Commander that rewards you for playing with lots of legends from across the color spectrum. Not only do your other legends get a big buff, but Jodah also generates card advantage whenever you cast your legendary spells.

The rainbow in the artwork on a five-color card is a nice touch. As you’ll see many of these cards are quite flavorful designs. As for reprint value, Jodah isn’t the most incredible legendary creature out there. It’s worth just under $2 in its cheapest form according to TCGplayer.

Patrick Star

Barktooth Warbeard

Next, we have Spongebob’s best friend, Patrick Star. Patrick is quite the amusing character, but let’s just say he isn’t the smartest fellow in Bikini Bottom. Patrick has uttered the flavor text “I don’t get it…” on many occasions, and the artwork really hits home.

Perhaps the most hilarious aspect of this card, though, is the decision to use Barktooth Warbeard as the original MTG card of choice. Barktooth Warbeard is one of many creatures from way back in Legends that has absolutely no abilities. This does make Patrick a bit less appealing as a Commander card, but given Barktooth Warbeard’s lack of reprints, the card actually has higher reprint value than Jodah at just under $3.

Squidward, Sarcastic Snob

Squidward Tentacles, Spongebob and Patrick’s grumpy neighbor, of course makes an appearance in the MTG Spongebob Secret Lair. Squidward’s flavor text “I hate all of you.” really sums up his attitude in general.

Wizards could have gone a few different directions with the reskin, including using an actual Octopus legend like Marvo, Deep Operative. Instead, they went a different direction and chose a Horror, which is pretty funny.

Grazilaxx pairs nicely with evasive creatures that can help you generate card advantage, as well as cheap creatures with enters-the-battlefield triggers that you can bounce and replay if they get blocked. The card isn’t too valuable though, holding a price tag of just $1.50 unfortunately.

Gary, the Snail

Gary, the Snail, Spongebob’s pet, makes an appearance here as well. Wizards decided this time around to use a Slug MTG creature to represent Gary. While this is fitting, it is a bit strange to see such a big monster get reskinned as puny Gary.

Toxrill, the Corrosive is a huge seven-drop that completely takes over the game if left unchecked. It shrinks all opposing creatures every end step and rewards you every time an opposing creature with a slime counter on it dies. Throw in some Proliferate cards and mass removal spells, and you’ve got a gameplan.

From a financial standpoint, Toxrill is by far the priciest card among the Spongebob legends. At over $17, Gary, the Snail pays for a big chunk of the Secret Lair by itself.

Mr. Krabs, Penny Pincher

Mr. Krabs is Spongebob’s and Squidward’s greedy boss at The Krusty Krab, and is well worth a card in this Secret Lair. As you might have guessed, a popular MTG Crab legend is what’s getting reskinned in this case.

Charix is a creature with an absolutely massive amount of toughness, but with a little mana investment, you can start slamming for huge chunks of damage. This Leviathan wears equipment well and can threaten to deal lots of Commander damage alongside effects like Twisted Image.

Nonetheless, Charix isn’t the strongest Commander. It also doesn’t even crack the 50 cent mark in its cheapest form. Sorry Mr. Krabs, you aren’t worth as much as you think you are!

Sandy Cheeks, Martial Astronaut

Our next legend is none other than Toski, Bearer of Secrets. This Squirrel Commander is unsurprisingly represented by Sandy Cheeks, Spongebob’s intelligent, Karate-loving Squirrel friend.

Toski is a really sweet EDH general. It’s tough to kill, can’t be countered, and can draw you a ton of cards at once. All you need to do is go wide and you’re bound to connect in combat with some creatures.

Despite being reprinted in Murders at Karlov Manor Commander and Bloomburrow Commander Precons, Toski still sits at a little under $3.

Plankton, Tiny Tyrant

Lastly, we have Plankton represented as Skrelv, Defector Mite. Plankton has spent long hours and endless attempts trying to steal the Krabby Patty formula to improve business at the Chum Bucket, but to no avail. His tiny stature makes Skrelv a solid choice for a reskin.

Skrelv synergizes well with other toxic threats and ways to proliferate poison counters. Skrelv’s ability to grant evasion to your other creatures with toxic can help get the poison train rolling. This card checks in at nearly $2 in its cheapest form.

Total Reprint Value

Overall, this group of legendary cards makes for a solid Secret Lair. Toxrill definitely carries most of the weight, but the total value of the Secret Lair isn’t lacking. Assuming these seven legends make up an individual Secret Lair, the total value of the non-foil product comes out to almost $29. Most non-foil Secret Lairs go on sale for $29.99. Add in the meme value the MTG Spongebob cards bring to the table, and you’ve got a decent package.

Of note, a foil version of this Secret Lair has some extra appeal. This is because Barktooth Warbeard would be receiving its first foil treatment ever. It’s unlikely the foil will be in super high demand considering how bad Barktooth Warbeard is as a card, but it’s worth keeping in mind, nonetheless.

Overall, this Secret Lair should make for a great gift to any Spongebob Squarepants and Magic the Gathering fan.
